Occupational Summary

Develop, coordinate and administer a comprehensive athletic medical program for Duke University intercollegiate sports and provide professional and administrative services necessary for the implementation and expansion of such a program.

Work Performed

Develop, coordinate and administer a comprehensive sports medical program for participants of University intercollegiate sports; supervise the treatment or referral of injuries cognizant Medical Center unit and interface directly with medical personnel in the treatment of students. Develop and maintain a program of preventive physical care for Duke Athletic teams; determine and ensure the acquisition of safety equipment and supplies applicable to the respective intercollegiate sports. Maintain liaison between the University Athletic Department and the Student Health Office, Duke University Medical Center, in arranging physical examinations and in coordinating and conducting post injury rehabilitation for athletes; supervise the compilation and maintenance of statistical records of team injuries and medical data for the Athletic Department.

Plan and schedule the purchasing of all athletic medical program supplies and equipment within allocated budget parameters.

Assist the Business Manager and Athletic Director in preparation of the Sports Medical Program budget.

Instruct, supervise and review the performance of Athletic Medicine staff.

Study, evaluate and recommend new techniques and equipment in Athletic Medicine.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein. The above statements describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this classification. Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires knowledge of the general principles of preventative physical care for athletes, first aid treatment and referral and post injury rehabilitation normally acquired through bachelor's degree in appropriate area of specialization and Master's degree are requirements. Certified by the National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification (NATABOC). Fulfill requirements to apply for State Licensure with the NC Board of Athletic Trainer Examiners.

Experience

Work requires fives years experience participating in various administrative, educational or medical support services such as coordinating arrangements for appointments and activities, participating in physical training tasks and instructions, providing first aid treatment or other related functions in order to acquire skills necessary to develop and administer a comprehensive sports medical program for intercollegiate athletes.
