Occupational Summary
The Director of Chapel Music provides artistic and administrative leadership for all aspects of the Chapel Music Program. The Director reports to the Dean of Duke Chapel working alongside two other senior level colleagues: the Assistant Dean and the Director of Development and Strategy. The Director of Chapel Music supervises a team of staff members, including: the Chapel Organist and two Chapel Organ Scholars, the Associate Conductor, and administrative support staff. The Director also collaborates with the University Organist, the University Carillonneur, and the Curator of Organs and Harpsichords. The Director is responsible for fostering a lively musical program of volunteer and staff singers and instrumentalists, engaging students in every aspect of the departments work, and representing the mission and ministry of Duke University Chapel to local, national, and international constituencies.
Work Performed
An essential member of the Music and Ministry team, the Director of Chapel Music works closely with the Dean, the Assistant Dean, the Pastor to the Congregation at Duke Chapel, and the Chapel Organist, in planning worship service music (introits, hymns, anthems, organ, instrumental) to complement the scripture, liturgy, and preaching as appropriate for the day.
The Director of Chapel Music directs the Duke Chapel Choir (the primary choir, consisting of approximately 90 voices, supporting weekly Sunday morning worship services during the academic year) and the Scholar Cantorum (a subset of the Chapel Choir created for those who would like to sing early music in a smaller ensemble).
The Director is responsible for all aspects of the annual performances of Handels Messiah in early December and a major oratorio in the Spring. The Director oversees the work of the Associate Conductor, Chapel Organist, and Organ Scholars to ensure the excellence of the Vespers, Evensong, and Organ Scholars programs. While coordinating all guest choirs and performances in the Chapel, the Director may also envision and assemble new groups, ensuring the flourishing and cohesiveness of the entire program.
The Director of Chapel Music works with artists and musical colleagues across Duke University, bridging "erudition et religion" in thoughtful and effective ways.
The Director of Chapel Music may serve in teaching roles beyond Duke Chapel, specifically within the Divinity School and the Department of Music.
The Director of Chapel Music should capitalize on the opportunities and obligations for effective collaboration with colleagues in the arts across Duke, Durham, and the region, which will be many.
Opportunities for national and international touring and new creative projects are also encouraged.
The Director of Chapel Music works in concert with the Director of Development and Strategy to identify, cultivate, and steward donors to the Chapel Music program.
Other duties and special projects may be assigned by the Dean as needed.
The Director must be innovative and collaborative, skilled in the management of people and resources, kind, reasonable, energetic, and demanding as well as understanding.
The Director must be able to work with the wide range of Chapel constituents, which include people from students to senior adults in the choirs, the members of the Congregation of Duke Chapel and visitors, the larger Duke University campus, and the vibrant, ever growing arts communities of this region.
The Director must have the capacity to recruit, mentor, and manage a talented and dedicated music staff team, organize and conduct Chapel Choir and other ensemble rehearsals as needed, travel for performances (including international), participate in occasional fundraising, provide oversight of music budget, and direct the ongoing development of the Chapel Music, broadening the program to include new perspectives and opportunities while respecting time honored traditions at Duke.
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training
Bachelor and Master's degrees required; Doctorate strongly preferred.
Experience
Requires seven years of relevant experience.
