Occupational Summary

The role provides senior operational leadership for key strategic initiatives in clinical research for the Duke University School of Nursing (DUSON). The individual in this position will report to the Vice Dean for Research and will work closely with the Clinical Research Unit faculty director and other executive leaders in the Center for Nursing Research, and across DUSON. In this role, and in close collaboration with the Vice Dean for Research, they will oversee the implementation of institutional initiatives in clinical research across DUSON and in partnership with other Duke University Departments, Institutes, Centers and DUHS. The person will develop effective relationships with colleagues across DUSON, Duke SOM, Duke Health, DUHS, DOCR, DOSI, OASIS and key academic, administrative and other stakeholders across Duke. The person will be responsible for the implementation of the clinical research strategic plans with other organizations to support the development of innovative programs or services. S/he will oversee, execute and monitor the progress for research initiatives and special projects and/or operational functions; to include service quality, timeliness of deliverables, regulatory compliance, and adherence to budgets. She/he will oversee all operational aspects in the Center for Nursing Research.

Work Performed

Collaboration with the VDR

Perform responsibilities under the direction of, and close collaboration with the VDR.

Communicate new or challenging issues and changes in policy with the VDR.

Identify new and innovative ways to advance the mission of the CNR and research goals of the strategic plan for DUSON.

Oversee the implementation of strategic plans for DUSON's research vision, and direction for research and partnership across Duke University and DUHS.

Liaise and partner with Duke Health, DukeForge, DHTS to develop and execute embedded health system research and other research/development initiatives.

Lead the development of the bi-annual CNR Chancellor's Report and annual CNR DUSON report.

Facilitate the Research Advisory Council.

The Assistant Dean for Research Development will also serve as the Faculty Science Core Lead and oversee faculty research development with the Vice Dean.

Lead the development and implementation of faculty mentoring activities. Examples include facilitation of research development workshops and other forums including those identified by the research areas of excellence and research interest groups.

Develop a more efficient grant proposal review process (Mock Reviews, Specific Aims and Think Tank sessions). Determine appropriate resources required to pursue new initiatives.

Serve as a liaison to the broader Duke University research community to facilitate DUSON faculty research and partnerships.

Operations

Oversee the operations of the Center for Nursing Research which is responsible for guiding and supporting DUSON's research mission and strategic plans for DUSON.

Responsible for guiding the human resource hiring process for selected staff positions (existing or future) in the CNR.

Responsible for the supervision of the majority of CNR staff members.

Determine the most efficient use and job responsibilities for CNR staff.

Monitor and analyze institutional effectiveness through evaluation tools and dashboards for clinical research.

Research Development

Partner with other Duke leaders to advance initiatives such as in data sciences, use of biomarkers, translational science, population health, outcomes research and health policy.

Identify research funding opportunities and potential collaborations with funding agencies, institutions, universities, and industries. Work collaboratively with the Pre-Award Liaison Services Core to inform faculty of innovative funding opportunities. Assess the suitability and potential for success for new research opportunities and provide information to the Center for Nursing Research (CNR) leadership.

Facilitate the grant proposal review process (Mock Reviews, Specific Aims and Think Tank sessions).

Determine appropriate resources required to pursue new initiatives.

Perform substantive editing of grant proposals and attachments, working in close collaboration with junior and senior faculty members as well as trainees to ensure the submission of proposals of the highest quality.

Identify and support partnerships with academic and community organizations internal and external to Duke University for funding opportunities. Work closely with the DUSON and Duke offices of development to identify foundations and donors for future research funding.

Provide oversight for the CNR internal pilot award funding initiatives.

Facilitate CNR initiatives, including participating in working groups and investigating cost and feasibility of new projects.

Maintain working knowledge of research pre-award requirements.

Understand the full landscape of ongoing research and faculty research interests at DUSON.

Participate in and represent DUSON in the Duke University Research Development community.

Responsible for ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Bachelor's degree in related field required; graduate degree in related field preferred.

Experience

Work requires a minimum of five years of experience in research operations in a university environment involving federal and industry sponsors, including development and leadership of new project implementation efforts.
