Occupational Summary

Manage the planning and coordination of the operating room scheduling system; prioritize patient flow and ensure optimum utilization of operating room services to include elective procedures, emergencies and modifications to the daily operating room schedule.

Work Performed

Manage the planning and coordination of the operating room scheduling system in conjunction with the Anesthesiologists and Head Nurses; supervise the overall functioning of the Daily Schedule Coordination Office.

Prioritize patient flow through comprehensive clinical knowledge of case types and operating room resources; adjust staffing assignments of nursing and ancillary personnel to provide adequate room coverage.

Communicate and maintain liaison with Anesthesiologists, Surgeons, Head Nurses, ancillary personnel and various inpatient and outpatient units to communicate schedule changes and room status.

Expedite completion of daily elective schedule; post emergencies and add on surgeries to schedule as appropriate; make scheduling decisions as necessary to ensure optimum utilization of operating rooms; resolve scheduling conflicts and authorize modifications as appropriate.

Supervise activities of Health Unit Coordinators and receptionist in providing services to patients and family members. Supervise various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires completion of an accredited Bachelor's degree in Nursing, Associate's degree in Nursing, or Nursing Diploma.

State of North Carolina license is also required.

Experience

Work requires three years operating room nursing experience to acquire broad based knowledge of operating room case types and operating room schedules.
