Occupational Summary

Provide operational, financial and organizational direction to retail operations within the Duke University Stores in the areas of merchandising, expense and loss control, profit management, budget planning and supervision in order to ensure efficient and economically sound operations.

Work Performed

Direct the overall activities of retail operations including the Duke University Store, Lobby Shop, Uncle Harry's, East Campus Store, Hotel Gift Shop, Washtub and Specialty Services to include merchandising, display, sales, inventory levels, maintenance of cash receipts, record keeping and preparation of pertinent financial reports.

Evaluate proposed policies and procedures and make recommendations for increased savings and cost reductions.

Manage the ordering, receiving, storing, pricing, advertising, packaging and researching of all merchandise selections; assist in the formulation of policies related to marketing of merchandise.

Analyze, plan and coordinate all sale programs; manage and coordinate special events and visual presentations in terms of advertising, layout, and merchandising.

Prepare annual budget of anticipated sales, expenses, and inventories; review financial statements regularly to monitor potential problems.

Recommend the procurement of equipment and facilities instrumental to the performance of operations.

Coordinate all matters related to receiving records, invoices, transfers, shortage and damage reports and purchase orders.

Plan work schedules, ensuring proper distribution of assignments and adequate staffing, space and facilities for performance of duties.

Manage periodic physical inventories.

Recommend various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.

Experience

Work requires six years experience in stores operations, retail, merchandising or related business to acquire skills necessary to plan, manage and control costs and profits within a high volume, multifaceted stores operations business.
