Occupational Summary

Develop, coordinate, and implement research and administrative strategies essential to the successful management of clinical research projects conducted by principal investigators at Duke Clinical Research Institute; perform a variety of duties involved in the organization, documentation, and compilation of clinical research data.

Work Performed

Manage proposal and budget development, contract negotiations, and study implementation.

Participate in writing and submitting industry and federal grant proposals; coordinate the preparation, submission, and management of industry proposals, federal grant applications, and renewals.

Work closely with department administrator on all financial and contractual issues and prepare budgets.

Provide information to support the negotiation of budgets and contracts; work independently to create and negotiate budgets and contracts; recognize, articulate, and negotiate budgets for projects that need to deviate from standard department budget model.

Mentor and advise other project managers on budget creation and approaches to complex budget scenarios.

Submit invoices to sponsors and follow up with sponsors regarding outstanding invoices and cash flow issues.

Recognize and ensure follow through on potential business opportunities with current sponsors.

Maintain liaison with project team and study sponsors; assist principal investigators with clarifying study goals and objectives with sponsor contacts, as necessary.

Independently identify and manage vendors.

Develop project plans by working with principal investigators to establish overall project timelines and conduct tracking of project deliverables.

Manage sponsor related projects; serve as main contact between project team and sponsor for projects.

Plan project timelines and schedules to ensure project team understanding of assignments and to ensure that all deliverables and critical issues are addressed; lead the development of project plans by establishing overall project timelines and conduct tracking of project deliverables.

Provide information to principal investigators to assist with the prioritization of project team workload among multiple active projects; work directly with project team members to prioritize overall workload among multiple active projects.

Delegate tasks to and oversee work of data technicians, as necessary.

Facilitate interactions among team members and/or project participants; exhibit inclusive approach to decision making and goal setting processes; encourage participation from team members; consistently recognize the contributions of other team members.

Advise and mentor other project managers on approaches to resolving operational problems.

Create, lead, consult, or actively participate in department nonproject initiatives.

Collaborate with principal investigators in the writing of reports and manuscripts; in certain cases, lead the development of study reports and manuscripts.

Assume primary responsibility for ensuring study is compliant with applicable government regulations, data access rules, and privacy regulations, as necessary.

Prepare and independently conduct presentations regarding operational processes and capabilities and research results; advise and mentor other project managers in the conduct of such presentations.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Completion of a master's degree in public health, health administration, or a related area with three years directly related research experience; or completion of a bachelor's degree plus a minimum of five years directly related experience in research.

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
