Occupational Summary

The Assistant Director of Sports Nutrition will work directly under the supervision of the Director of Sports Nutrition and will collaborate with the Director of Sports Nutrition in the planning, development, implementation, evaluation and management of the sports nutrition services provided to student athletes representing all Intercollegiate Athletic teams, with a major focus on Olympic Sports.

Work Performed

Provides nutrition assessment, develops nutrition care plans, and provides individual medical nutrition therapy as part of a multidisciplinary sports medicine team.

Collaborates with Athletic Medicine Staff regarding individual athlete care and health related department programs.

Provides direction and communicates the value of nutrition programs designed to promote the health and sports performance of student athletes, which includes counseling individuals and groups on daily nutrition for performance and health.

Assists teams with meals, menu planning, and game time fueling for home and travel competition. Travels with designated teams, as needed.

Conducts team talks and provides educational material, including grocery store tours, dining hall tours, cooking classes, and more.

Educates teams on the use of supplements, ergogenic aids, and banned substances. Evaluates nutritional trends and supplement products.

Oversees the functionality of the Scott Performance Center Nutrition Facilities, including the Gatorade Recovery Bar and the Blue Devil Fuel Zone.

Coordinates directly with the Trident Staff to oversee the menu development and logistical operations of the Olympic Sport Training Table.

Conducts in services for Athletic Medicine and Sports Performance Staff to educate on proper administration of team body composition testing via BodPod.

Provides counseling and care for high risk populations, including eating disorders and disordered eating.

Coordinates with the Director of Sports Nutrition to write policies and procedures for the growth and development of the Sports Nutrition Department.

Assists the Director of Sports Nutrition in management and oversight of the Sports Nutrition Fellows and the volunteer interns.

Maintains professional competency and skills required for professional practice.

Assists with any other tasks and developments as delegated by the Director of Sports Nutrition.

Counsel athletes on optimal nutrition for exercise training, competition, recovery from exercise, weight management, hydration, immunity, disordered eating, travel, bone health, digestive health, diabetes, supplementation, and more.

Conduct body composition assessments and counsel student athletes on achieving and maintaining a level of body mass, body fat, and muscle mass that is consistent with good health and good performance.

Provide team nutrition education for assigned teams in the form of educational presentations, handouts, grocery tours, dining hall tours, cooking classes, and other mediums.

Develops education materials for Sports Nutrition Department social media. Manages the ordering, stocking, and maintenance of the Scott Performance Center Nutrition Facilities (Gatorade Recovery Bar and Blue Devil Fuel Zone).

Creates and implements education material and labeling systems for the Olympic Sports Training Table.

Oversees menu development for the Olympic Sport Training Table.

Oversight of the Volunteer Internship Program.

Critically review literature on sports nutrition, especially as it pertains to college health and assess its applicability to athlete health care.

Collaborate with Director of Sports Nutrition to provide innovative oral and written nutrition education.

Collaborate with the Director of Sports Nutrition to write policies and procedures for the continued development of Sports Nutrition Department. Collaborate with Athletic Medicine Staff, Sports Performance Staff, Team Physicians, Academics Staff, and Sports Psychology as a member of a multi-disciplinary team member.

Evaluate nutritional supplements, including herbal supplements for legality, safety, quality, and efficacy; and monitor use of appropriate supplementation.

Maintain dietetic registration and continuing education requirements.

Stay abreast of current food, nutrition, and health issues and research related to sports nutrition.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires bachelor's degree in dietetics/nutrition and Registered Dietitian required. Masters degree preferred.

Experience

Two years of experience in a collegiate sports nutrition program.
