Occupational Summary

The Pratt School of Engineering's Associate Dean and Director of Development has overall responsibility for planning, developing and directing a comprehensive fund raising program for the Pratt School. The Associate Dean and Director of Development recommends both a short term and long term strategic Development plan by identifying benchmark goals for the organization, and a clear mechanism for achievement of those goals. The position is accountable for achieving the Schools philanthropic fund raising targets.

Work Performed

Direct overall activities of Pratt Development Office related to corporate, foundation, alumni and public relations programs, which promote the School of Engineering appropriately.

Lead Pratts principal gift fundraising, the Engineering Board of Visitors and Pratts Duke Forward campaign.

In collaboration with Pratt and University leadership set the schools fundraising and University wide campaign/initiative goals, manage the offices operational and campaign budgets, managing the major gifts, alumni, foundation, and industry relations teams.

Plan, direct and/or review new or major external affairs initiatives ensuring coordination with appropriate School, University Development and other University personnel.

Develop strategies for major gift solicitations; identify, cultivate and solicit major gifts from perspective donors to include individuals, foundations and corporations, and involving annual, capital and deferred gift prospects to support annual giving, endowment, general programs, and capital projects; maintain liaison with University Developments Major Gifts Office.

Maintain and develop procedures in coordination with and consistent with established recording procedures of the Office of Gift Records to ensure effective collecting, recording, accounting, acknowledgment and follow up on all private gifts to the School of Engineering.

Facilitate relationships with key University officers, trustees, deans, faculty, and staff including the President with principal gift prospects and volunteers.

Provide assistance with principal and major gift prospects assigned to other University/Pratt development staff as requested.

Identify, recommend and implement cultivation and solicitation strategies of individual prospects, working with administration, faculty and volunteers as appropriate; meet with prospects and volunteers, traveling as necessary.

Develop and maintain active efforts to evaluate prospects identified through fieldwork, screening and research.

Assist administrators and faculty in the recognition and prioritization of institutional and departmental funding needs; keep abreast of institutional and departmental priorities, University programs, personalities and events.

Create and implement a comprehensive development plan for fundraising that includes individual, corporate and foundation sources for gift generation, while consistently increasing giving and the Schools philanthropic base.

Propose long and short term institutional development related communication strategies to cultivate positive relationships between the School, its alumni, and donors.

Measure and report progress towards fundraising goals and provide insight into improving the effectiveness of fundraising activities.

Lead campaign planning and management, including working with the dean to assess overall campaign readiness, feasibility of projected dollars to be raised, and overall campaign plan, including marketing, budgetary needs, donor recognition levels and staffing needs.

Provide leadership and manage day to day operations of the development team, clarifying goals and establishing timelines and milestones for accomplishing.

Provide direct supervision of development professionals, including hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules; conduct monthly assessment and review meetings; and conduct formal annual evaluations.

Develop and maintain a portfolio of prospects (75+) and an active cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship schedule with prospects and donors in the $50K+ range.

Cultivate and solicit, directly or through key University officers or volunteers, leadership gift prospects (ratings of $1M and up) as identified and assigned.

Maintain knowledge of current tax laws, investments and planned giving opportunities; use knowledge in prospect cultivation and solicitation as appropriate.

Plan and schedule work for the development team ensuring proper distribution of assignments and adequate manning, space and facilities for subsequent performance of duties.

Direct various personnel functions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, and vacation schedules.

Determine fiscal requirements for Pratt Development and Corporate/Foundation Relations teams; prepare budgetary recommendations; monitor expenses.

Prepare reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.

Assist the Dean in the development and implementation of special projects including, but not limited to, strategic planning and information management.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Bachelor's degree in related field.

Experience

At least ten years of directly related experience, such as team management, project management, and fund raising is required. Experience in higher education, alumni relations or development is preferred.
