Occupational Summary
Classification created to permit compensation to Masters students performing research on Campus and in the Medical Center. The use of this classification is reserved for students who are enrolled in a full time Masters program at Duke. Employment is secondary to their academic pursuit. Registration for 9 or more credit units of course work during an academic term constitutes full time enrollment for students in a Masters program. Social Security is not deducted from the pay of a student as defined above but will be deducted during any term where a Masters student works but is not registered for continuation. A Duke Masters Student Research Assistant may work no more than 19.9 hours per week during academic schedule and is eligible for Workmens Compensation benefits only. This classification is administered on Campus through the Office of the Provost and in the Medical Center through the Office of the Chancellor for Health Affairs.
Work Performed
Master's Student Research Assistants (RAs) perform a variety of functions related to research, under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, and that contribute to the intellectual and professional development of the Master's student.
Perform a variety of complex and independent activities involved in the collection, analysis, documentation and interpretation of social, economic or health related information.
Establish work procedures; select sources of information and specific data; set up interviews with appropriate authorities or subjects and prepare correspondence to locate the specific data required.
Evaluate and interpret collected data and prepare oral presentations or written reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.
Develop forms and questionnaires and coordinate the application of research techniques.
Confer with principal investigator in developing plans for research projects and to discuss the interpretation of results and the preparation of manuscripts for publication.
Supervise the work of lower level employees engaged in the collection and tabulation of data; train new personnel.
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
