Occupational Summary

Supervise and coordinate activities of personnel engaged in the production of medical artwork for publication, research, and teaching activities, ensuring efficient and high quality service.

Work Performed

Supervise and coordinate the preparation of printed and digital materials illustrating cellular processes, anatomical structures, surgical procedures, and other health science subjects for use in publications, research, and teaching activities.

Plan and schedule work for medical art employees ensuring proper distribution of assignments and adequate staffing, space and facilities for subsequent performance of duties.

Originate and develop innovative illustration and graphic art techniques to ensure efficiency and quality of materials and services.

Evaluate and recommend purchase of new products and equipment; maintain inventory of art supplies and equipment; reorder as required; ensure maintenance and proper functioning of medical art equipment. Assist in budget preparation for the medical art team.

Provide technical guidance and instruction to faculty and staff in medical art techniques and procedures. Supervise archiving of medical artwork and related graphic/printed materials.

Supervise various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers, and vacation schedules; train new employees.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires knowledge of fine arts and/or medical illustration normally acquired through a bachelor's degree in Graphic Art, Fine Art, Medical Illustration or a related field.

Experience

Work generally requires three years progressive experience in medical illustration/art, graphic art, fine art or a related field to acquire exposure to a variety of graphic and medical art techniques and procedures. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Skills

Expertise in medical artwork processes and health literacy standards.

High level of creativity and problem solving skills.

Strong attention to detail, organization, and time management.

Leadership, including delegating work appropriately and providing constructive feedback.

Diplomacy, including communicating effectively with both faculty and staff.

Customer service orientation.
