Occupational Summary

Provide organ music and musical accompaniment for choir, soloists, instrumentalists, and musical groups in Duke Chapel services, concerts, and other events.

Work Performed

Serve as accompanist (organ, piano and harpsicord) for the Chapel Choir and the Duke Divinity School Choir in rehearsals, concerts, services, recordings and concert tours.

Play for Sunday morning Chapel services and Duke University functions held in Duke Chapel (on Aeolian and Flentrop organs).

This responsibility is shared with the University Organist during the academic year. Play for short communion services scheduled after regular Sunday services (on Brombaugh mean-tone organ).

Play for funerals, memorial services and other special services as requested.

Provide organ music for Divinity School daily services and special services.

Oversee all musical aspects for weddings in the Chapel, including hiring organists for any weddings not played by the Chapel Organist.

Play one full-length organ recital annually.

Procure organists to play daily noontime demonstrations on the Chapel organs.

Suggest and provide appropriate instrumental arrangements for occasional hymns and other Chapel service music. Manage the Waldo Beach Hymnody Endowment.

Serve as principal liaison with the Curator of Organs on matters pertaining to the maintenance of the Aeolian organ in the Chapel and manage its use.

Serve as principal liaison with and host for instrumentalists and musical groups that perform in Chapel services, whether they do so separately or in conjunction with the Chapel Choir.

Maintain the Chapel instrumental music library.

Consult and advise with Chapel staff, committees, campus ministers and Chapel Choir officers on matters of worship, liturgy and music as requested.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Requires knowledge of organ technique and repertoire, accompanying, service playing, improvisation and general liturgical practices generally equivalent to a Master's Degree in Organ Performance.

Experience

Work requires the ability to accompany choirs, play organ recitals and worship services (including hymns, service music and choral accompaniments) and improvise transitions between events in worship services, generally acquired through at least two years of related experience.
