Occupational Summary

Provide administrative direction and coordination of operational budgets and organizational and business matter for departments, programs and activities under the jurisdiction of the Provost.

Work Performed

Oversee several functional areas within the Provost's Office including: Finance and Administration, Human Resources and Faculty Affairs Administration. In addition, oversee financial and administrative aspects of the Duke Office of DKU Relations and work closely/jointly with others on Capital and Operating budgets, Undergraduate Financial Aid and Office of Global Affairs.

Be responsible for financial management, analysis, and reporting for the Provost Area Management Center (PAMC), including 10 schools, the University Institutes and Centers, as well as academic support units, with consolidated operating budget totaling over $3.2 billion. Be responsible for the annual budget development process for PAMC, including the consolidation of the operating and capital budgets for all schools and academic support units.

Serve as an ex-officio member of the Resources Committee of the Board of Trustees, representing the PAMC on all financial matters, in coordination with the Vice President for Finance and Treasurer, as necessary.

Advise the Provost in all financial decisions to provide capacity to strategically plan and manage finances across all schools and academic support units.

Represent the Provost in multiple venues, including with external audiences. Interact directly with schools and departments and resolve issues raised by deans, department chairs and financial officers on matters related to finance, administration andhuman resources. Partner with Central Finance on key strategic financial initiatives and projects.Work collaboratively with all management centers on matters impacting PAMC in the areas of finance, administration, human resources and international activities (finance, human resources, risk). Present Provost Area (schools and academic support units) financial information to leadership venues, university committees (e.g., UPC), managers meetings etc.

Make decisions on complex methodologies involving inter-campus relationships and cost allocations, partnering with Central Administration where appropriate. Participate on committees evaluating risk, fringe benefits, changes in university policies, etc.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Bachelor's degree in business, finance or accounting. MBA and/or CPA preferred, but significant experience in a large research university is more important.

Experience

Work generally requires at least ten (10) years of experience leading and managing financial and business operations at a research university or equivalent experience advising to, or with career progression in, a large complex organization.
