Occupational Summary

Position monitors student progress toward a variety of degrees at the Pratt School of Engineering. The Assistant Dean provides information on the curriculum and academic policies and regulations to students, academic advisors, and faculty. The position also contributes to the development of new and revised academic policies and programs.

Work Performed

Monitors student progress towards degrees.

Meets with students to develop an accurate 4 year (8 semester) plan once the student has decided on a major.

Meets with students returning from leaves of absence (particularly if mental health issues were involved in the separation from the university) to monitor compliance with terms of readmission (including class attendance).

Provides accurate information on the curriculum and policies and regulations to students, academic advisors, and faculty Reviews Pratt School website and Departmental websites to be sure that information regarding academic requirements, policies & procedures, etc. are being kept current and accurate.

Develops advising handouts, check sheets, and information for academic advisors as well as holds training sessions for new advisors.

Meets once per semester with faculty to obtain feedback on advising, policies, and regulations.

Attends monthly meetings with Directors of Undergraduate Studies in Pratt.

Meets with students who are considering study abroad to discuss degree requirements.

Helps maintain accurate advisement reports by submitting changes to the appropriate operator.

Contributes to the development of new and revised academic policies and programs.

Works with faculty and directors of undergraduate studies, as needed Monitors students behavioral and disciplinary issues.

Interacts with Undergraduate Office of Student Conduct when suspected violations of Duke Community Standard are reported.

Works with student groups within the Pratt School to enhance their educational experience outside the classroom.

Meets with representatives of Pratt School student groups on a monthly basis to monitor activities of student groups (guest speakers, student competitions, etc.).

Liaison to university resources (housing, student affairs, bursars office, registrar) when needed to enable student activities.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Master's Degree required, Ph.D. preferred

Experience

Work requires two years of experience in academic administration or a related setting to become familiar with academic policies, programs and regulations necessary to coordinate related services and activities

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
