Occupational Summary

The Assistant Vice President for Decision Support and Business Intelligence will be responsible for working cross-functionally across the entire Duke University Alumni Engagement and Development community to develop and execute focused strategies for increasing donor support and engagement with Duke University. The Assistant Vice President for Decision Support and Business Intelligence will be an innovative, strategic leader who can direct business intelligence initiatives that support the information needs of partners and front-line staff. This individual will customize strategies and processes to build an engaged, data-driven decision-making culture, and shape a business intelligence landscape that promotes a holistic vision of all constituents.

The Assistant Vice President for Decision Support and Business Intelligence must excel in a highly collaborative environment, working with teams to create innovative tactics that support strategic objectives and goals. This individual will actively contribute to the research and management of prospects for the Alumni Engagement and Development community. A successful candidate will demonstrate a clear commitment to the importance of higher education and the values of Duke University and possess strengths in comprehensive data analysis and the delivery of timely, actionable insights using business intelligence. They will have strong experience in stakeholder engagement, strategic thinking, data governance best practices and project management. They will be adept at managing complex relationships and serve as a thought partner for senior alumni engagement and development leadership.

Work Performed

Develop and execute business intelligence strategy and architecture to meet Alumni Engagement and Development team needs for comprehensive analytics, reporting, and data governance in order to surpass fundraising and engagement goals.

Oversight for an individual who manages identification, evaluation and recommendation of donor prospects, including nuanced analysis of biographical, philanthropic, professional, and financial information and ratings on capacity, affinity, and giving inclination.

Oversight of an individual who manages assignment of newly identified prospects and, in consultation with team leaders, develop proactive strategies in prospect management to maximize effectiveness of portfolios.

Manages a staff person who guides analysis of pipeline activity and reporting to drive strategic planning.

Monitor and assess effectiveness of BI services alignment with fundraising and engagement objectives, anticipating future needs.

Identify opportunities to convert constituent data into actionable business knowledge and provide leadership in gaining divisional adoption of best practices of a data informed decision-making organization.

Provide leadership to building and managing strategic relationships with key campus partners.

Foster and maintain high level relationships with key stakeholders throughout AE&D.

Serve as the primary contact with Duke's Office of Information Technology and serve as the point of contact for teams which provide service to AED including Alumni and Development Systems, Alumni and Development Records and others.

Collaborate with executive stakeholders and across Alumni Engagement and Development teams including all of our schools and unit's alumni engagement and development operations to identify needs for data analytics and develop thoughtful solutions to surpass fundraising objectives.

Facilitate cross-functional collaborations, encouraging innovation and knowledge sharing across departments and across campus particularly focused on serving the need of Duke's graduate and professional schools.

Regularly provide consultation and oversees consultation process with partners in Alumni Engagement and Development to assemble comprehensive prospect pools and develop targeted solicitation and engagement strategies.

Lead development, design, and implementation of advanced analytical reporting and business intelligence strategies to information decision- makers on KPIs and support data-driven decision-making to optimize fundraising and engagement results across the entire Alumni Engagement and Development landscape including within schools and units through techniques including data mining, benchmarking, predictive analysis, and modeling.

Analyze and present information for use in planning and decision-making in a way that is transparent, shareable, and repeatable.

Provide quantitative and qualitative analysis of pipeline activity, development, and health.

Reference historical comparisons of data to help inform and guide decision-making.

Centralize a standard set of data points and develop standardized reporting and metrics approaches.

Oversee proactive data enhancement practices and ensure data integrity across systems.

Identify data standards and policies for alumni and student information.

Collaborate with campus-wide to acquire and integrate constituent data for Alumni Engagement and Development strategies.

Participate in campus-wide data governance initiative in regard to constituent data.

Formalize and document data infrastructure and procedures.

Ensure philanthropic best practices and CASE standards throughout data lifecycle.

Streamline and automate Alumni Engagement and Development processes.

Stay informed on data trends and practices within higher education sector.

Work closely with Office of Information Technology to ensure Alumni Engagement and Development department's system security and manage user data access.

Recommend and implement technology solutions and infrastructure to enhance Alumni Engagement and Development reporting, analytics, and operations.

Develop standardization and implement data policies and warehouse storage solutions for alumni and student information.

Provide direction and guidance to oversee the Data Security Administrator for Alumni Engagement and Development.

Determine Fiscal requirements of the division and prepare budgetary recommendations; ensure expenditures ate monitored, verified, and reconciled.

Establish BI team goals and performance standards, and manage BI team workload and priorities.

Manage training for Alumni Engagement and Development staff on all tools.

Provide oversight to the processes associated with maintaining, managing, and replacing all technology.

Establish agreed upon protocols for all hardware and software decisions.

Will directly supervise a staff.

Liaison to leads of areas located in the Duke Office of Information Technology which support our work.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herin.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Master's degree in field of information systems, information science, software engineering, or related field or equivalent experience.

Experience

Minimum of 7 years of relevant and progressively strategic experience in business intelligence, data analysis, technical/operation management experience, or related research practice; higher education experience strongly preferred. Minimum of 5 years managing staff.
