Occupational Summary
The Executive Director of Fuqua???s Career Management Center (CMC) plays a pivotal role in advancing the career readiness and success of our students and alumni, which Duke and Fuqua consider key measures of institutional impact. This role leads the strategic direction and operational management of a comprehensive, integrated career center offering a robust portfolio of career services and engagement opportunities with employers and alumni. Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean for Innovation, the Executive Director manages a team of 34 staff and oversees multiple budgets. The role requires strong collaboration across Fuqua and Duke, stewardship of key relationships, and active participation in senior leadership initiatives
Work Performed
Provide strategic leadership and operational oversight for the department, encompassing employer engagement, business operations, and career coaching and programming for all Fuqua students and alumni.
Set and align strategic goals across CMC work teams. Ensure goals are aligned with Fuqua priorities and address the evolving needs of students, alumni, and employers
Ensure relevance and effectiveness of services and programs by staying current on hiring and workforce trends, best practices, student interests, and emerging technology tools.
Promote visibility and accessibility of the CMC across all constituencies
Foster a collaborative, innovative, and stakeholder-centric team culture.
Actively participate in Fuqua leadership team meetings, program reviews, new initiatives, and other committees as needed. Provide reports to the Dean and Board of Visitors.
Plan and manage department???s budgets, both operational and staffing, and ensure compliance with school/university policies and processes. Directly and indirectly supervise staff and actively support and foster professional development.
Represent the career center, both within Fuqua/Duke and externally, at relevant events, conferences, and professional associations.
Oversee the design and execution of scalable career programs, coaching, and resources tailored to student and alumni needs.
Continually enhance our services through a data-informed, stakeholder- centered approach. Leverage feedback from students, alumni, and employers to enhance programs, assess the impact of evolving trends, and adapt offerings to prepare students and alumni for success in today???s dynamic job market.
Drive the introduction of new resources and programs that advance career readiness and employability of our students and alumni.
Engage with students, especially student leaders, to enhance relationships and communications, and ultimately student satisfaction.
Listen to their feedback and concerns, work collaboratively to identify next steps, and follow through as agreed.
Provide limited career coaching to maintain direct insight into student and alumni needs.
Partner with Program Deans, Student Life, Admissions, and Development & Alumni Relations to integrate career readiness and support into the Fuqua experience. Lead and/or participate in agreed-upon initiatives
Collaborate with Duke???s other career directors to heighten alignment of our respective teams??? efforts; to share relevant resources and programs for students, alumni, and staff; and to advocate for issues of shared importance. Lead and/or participate in agreed-upon initiatives.
Coordinate cross-departmental efforts to support students of concern, ensuring timely communication and collaboration among staff while upholding strict standards of confidentiality and student privacy Represent Fuqua and/or the CMC in school and university initiatives, committees, and partnerships.
Ensure student privacy and compliance with CSEA Standards with Reporting Employment Statistics in the outreach, tracking, collection and reporting of career outcomes.
Oversee career outcomes reporting to internal and external stakeholders, ensuring data integrity and accuracy. Provide accurate, standards-compliant data to surveys such as for school accreditation and rankings.
Support and enhance the use of our enterprise technology platform (currently 12Twenty) to maximize student engagement and access to employer opportunities.
Monitor and evaluate third-party tools to enhance program offerings and student outcomes.
Collaborate with IT teams to ensure seamless integration of career services platforms and to ensure they meet Duke???s IT protocols.
Leverage data insights to inform decisions and to educate others about employment, recruiting, career trends, and the job search experience for our students and alumni.
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training
Master???s degree in business, education, counseling or a related field.
Experience
10 years of progressively responsible experience in higher education or business
Experience in advising, coaching, or mentoring students or professionals
Experience in leading and managing teams and operations
