Occupational Summary

Direct and facilitate the development, commercialization and transfer to practical uses of technologies and inventions originating in all University laboratories in a manner consistent with University policies and values; provide oversight to all University functions, activities and units that participate in the technology transfer process.

Work Performed

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty at Duke who are involved in research; assist faculty in the preparation of documentation necessary to effect the transfer of technology.

Develop strategies and means to maximize the appropriate commercial application of university research capacities.

Assist with research collaborations between the university and corporations in consultation with University Counsel and other appropriate University personnel.

Coordinate the process to select, prepare, and file patent disclosures and applications; market intellectual property directly and through other agencies.

Collaborate with appropriate University entities in the formation of start-up companies or other ventures based on University technology.

Identify and market University technologies to potential licensees through research, networking, personal contacts and communication with inventors.

Draft and negotiate legal agreements for patent licenses and options, and other technology transfer agreements required to execute strategies. Act as the point of contact for the negotiation of all business terms and conditions for licenses.

Monitor the functions, interests and responsibilities for technology transfer among various University organizational units on the campus and in the Medical Center.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires a Master's degree preferably in biological/life sciences, engineering/physical sciences, computing sciences/information technology or business administration.

Experience

Work requires ten years of directly related experience.

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.

Skills

Knowledge of and/or experience in a hard science (highly preferred); excellent interpersonal skills; written and verbal communication skills; ability to interact effectively in both academic and corporate cultures; ability to interact with scientists, research sponsors, industry representatives and patent attorneys; ability to work independently as well as in a team environment; to work under pressure with tight deadlines; business experience in negotiations, contracts, and new technology commercialization; highly self-motivated professional with exceptional sales, marketing and negotiating skills; experience in evaluating the commercial potential of early stage technology, and to effectively communicate the commercialization vision; detail oriented with ability to work on multiple projects at the same time; knowledge of intellectual property law and licensing practices; high degree of energy and enthusiasm.
