Occupational Summary

Manage the Duke University Primate Center's fossil, cadaver, and osteology collections to include coordination of and participation in activities involved in the collection, restoration, reproduction, and exchange of primate fossils in support of Primate Center's activities and objectives.

Work Performed

Manage the Duke University Primate Center's fossil, cadaver, and osteology collections to include arranging loans, accommodating visiting scientists studying the collections, and training and supervising staff and students in preparing specimens.

Provide practical training to graduate students by instructing them in laboratory and field expedition methods as well as assembling collections of research materials; teach course or program laboratory sections as requested.

Coordinate and organize field work required for the collecting of fossils to include arranging for vehicles, work and camp sites, tools, and field interpreters; participate in meetings with expedition hosts to establish agreements on distribution of fossils.

Plan and schedule work for the field workers and laborers as necessary, providing training and guidance, ensuring proper distribution of assignments and adequate staffing for the performance of duties.

Coordinate the cast sale and exchange program of fossils, replicas, and molds with other institutions to enhance and develop Primate Center fossil collections; maintain record of fossil collection.

Assist the Director in the preparation of grant proposals to funding agencies, foundations, corporations and individuals.

Determine fiscal requirements of paleontological activities and prepare budgetary recommendations; maintain records of expenditures from expeditions and related activities, ensuring costs remain within budgetary limitations.

Prepare reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends, and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires knowledge of paleontological expeditions, fossil recovery and replica preparation generally acquired through a master's degree in Geology, Anthropology or a related field.

Experience

Work requires the ability to coordinate and participate in specialized activities involved in the collection, restoration, reproduction and exchange of primate fossils generally acquired through six years of related experience.
