Occupational Summary

The Toxicology program policy is to provide clients with expert toxicological evaluations of consumer art materials and consumer products as required by US Federal regulations. Federal regulations require that the Director be board certified in the area of general toxicology or a specific area of medical practice. To successfully implement the program policy, the Director must have broad experience in applying toxicological principals including risk assessment to consumer product evaluations as well as experience in managing a staff of toxicologists and data entry specialists.

Work Performed

Develop and maintain a plan to address and to comply with changing State and Federal regulatory requirements for evaluating of consumer art materials and other consumer products.

Develop and maintain a training program for implementing the analytical toxicology data base which addresses the needs of the program staff toxicologists and facilitates the performance of their duties.

Maintain close interaction with computer software personnel who routinely upgrade and modernize the program's analytical data base.

Maintain currency in toxicological issues pertinent to consumer product toxicology by attending and encouraging toxicology staff to attend seminars, scientific meetings, and continuing education programs.

Guide and support an "In-house Journal Club" to foster professional interaction on toxicological issues of interest and/or concern among the Duke Toxicological Staff members Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) in the use the analytical data base system to assure that analytical procedures are consistently and accurately employed by the toxicology staff.

Maintain dialogues with Association members and their board of directors.

Maintain daily accessibility to members and the board of directors. C

Controlling finance.

Periodically assess the SOP's for the toxicology program staff to assure accurate guidelines are in place or team members to effectively implement their job responsibilities.

Provide a forum for staff members to make suggestions for increasing the efficiency of toxicology program operational capabilities.

Assume full accountability to the board of directors for all program operations.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Ph.D. in Toxicology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physiology or a related field.

Experience

A minimum of 8 years of experience in active practice of toxicology beyond post-doctoral research training with two to three years of experience in consumer product toxicology. Program Management/supervision or technical team leadership experience preferred.
