Occupational Summary
The Senior Managing Director International Development reports to the Senior Associate Vice President for Duke Campaigns and Chief Development Officer (Sr. AVP and CDO) and serves as a member of his/her senior development team. The Senior Managing Director International Development will develop and implement the vision for International Development and will have executive oversight for all aspects of the department. S/he will Administer a comprehensive International Giving program for all of Duke's international constituents (alumni, parents, and friends).
The Senior Managing Director International Development will lead a regionally based major gifts program focused on gifts of $100,000 to $5,000,000+ that support priorities across Duke. S/he will also oversee operations, and manage: regional directors of international development (2); an international major gift / development officer; and a program coordinator. International development will continue to grow with two new requested positions in the pipeline for FY25. The Sr. AVP and CDO and Senior Managing Director will work closely with the leadership of DKU, the Annual Fund, Principal Gifts, Campaign Planning, Gift Planning, Foundation Relations, Trinity and The Graduate School, Fuqua, The Law School, and other leaders across Duke Alumni Engagement and Development (DAED) and Associate Deans of Schools and Units across Duke to continue to support a strategic and successful international fundraising program.
Work Performed
Solicit, cultivate and secure major and leadership gifts from $100,000 - $5M for all schools and units at Duke University, with emphasis on major and leadership gifts.
Identify volunteers and encourage their placement on school, unit, or regional boards as well as other volunteer opportunities across DAED and the University.
Develop and maintain a portfolio of select major & leadership gift prospects and maintain active efforts to evaluate prospects identified through fieldwork, screening and research.
Lead and execute strategies for cultivation and solicitation of single and multi-interest donors.
Travel with the president, provost, deans and interdisciplinary initiative directors to cultivate and solicit prospects or attend fundraising events; involve top Duke University academicians, leaders and volunteers in international fundraising efforts.
Identify new major gift prospects for all University areas and develop strategies for involvement and solicitation, including appropriate referrals to and/or joint work with colleagues in the schools and units.
Maintain active communication with development officers throughout the University to inform of travel and to visit potential prospects, to coordinate prospect activity and to "make and take" referrals.
Manage international regional fundraising efforts to include identifying new prospective major gift donors and developing long-range plans for their involvement in the University.
Provide assistance to major gift prospects assigned to other university development staff as requested and serve as a resource for development colleagues across the university. Help foster a university-wide major gift fundraising collaboration.
Significant international travel to meet with prospects and volunteers.
Serve as a senior member of Alumni Engagement and Development, collaborating on overall development strategies for Duke. Focus on developing and implementing the fundraising strategies and tactics in the AED Strategic Plan.
Serve on the leadership team of Sr. AVP and CDO in AED.
Assist administrators and faculty in the identification and prioritization of institutional and departmental funding needs that will be of interest in International Alumni; keep abreast of institutional priorities, programs, and events that advance our development efforts.
Lead the development of the international development program, encouraging and incenting excellence, innovation and high performance.
Lead both the international development team to develop the vision and operating plan, while continuously evaluating how to move the team forward optimally, ensuring consistent and supportive management across the entire team.
Lead and manage a team responsible for the solicitation, cultivation, and stewardship of major and leadership gifts across Duke University.
Lead a program that maximizes the effect of the international development team and that coordinates activity and enhances collaboration among the professional schools, other academic units, and the central development office.
Develop and facilitate strategies to ensure the success of the international development fundraising in the campaign. Meet weekly with the Senior Associate Vice President for Duke Campaigns and Chief Development Office to help move forward campaign planning and implementation, including international campaign planning. Ensure that campaign priorities and progress are understood and communicated to the team.
Ensure that the international development team maximizes all engagement opportunities for constituents and works collaboratively across the verticals within DAED and schools and units across Duke.
Coordinate with the leadership of the Duke Annual Fund and Gift Planning on a comprehensive reunion fundraising program.
Working with the Senior Director of Advancement Analytics and Analysis, monitor international development team performance and develop and refine a set of performance reports.
Maintain close contact with the associate deans of development and their teams to keep school and units priorities and needs available to the frontline fundraisers.
Determine fiscal requirements of office and prepare budgetary recommendations; ensure expenditures are monitored, verified, and reconciled.
Direct various personnel functions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers, and vacation schedules.
Prepare operating plans for use in Alumni Engagement and Development.
Representative Duties - Appropriately represent Duke University as "employer" to direct reports and direct reports as "employees" to Duke University.
Programmatic Duties - Ensure alignment of given programmatic, departmental, and/or organization-wide activities with AED strategic goals, priorities, and expectations.
Financial Duties - Exercise fiduciary responsibility for given individual, programmatic, departmental, and/or organization-wide activities in accordance with Duke's financial policies, procedures, and standards, and AED expectations.
Personnel Duties: Supervise direct reports in accordance with Duke's human resource policies, procedures, and standards, and AED expectations.
Personnel Duties: Hire & Onboard new employees (and offboard separating employees) in accordance with programmatic, departmental, and organization-wide priorities, Duke's human resource policies, procedures, and standards, and AED expectations
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training
Work requires communication, analytical, and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program. Advance degree preferred.
Experience
Work requires ten years of fundraising experience with a successful track record in major gifts and project management. Advanced degree preferred. Campaign experience is a plus.
Familiarity with research universities is preferred.
Excellent oral and written communications skills as well as good organizational skills are essential.
This position requires frequent travel.
