Occupational Summary
Administer the Planned Giving Program within the Office of University Development and provide professional legal advice on matters concerning deferred gifts to Duke University by alumni, faculty and friends of the University.
Work Performed
Coordinate planned giving activities and functions with various professional schools; complete gifts involving unitrusts, annuity trusts, bequests and insurance contracts.
Prepare University development proposals and present development projects to prospects for deferred and outright gifts; coordinate activities on various legal issues with the Office of University Counsel to protect the donor and to ensure compliance with governmental regulations and University investment policies.
Serve as a senior staff member in formulating and enunciating policy relating to University development activities; direct and staff the Duke University Estate Planning Council, direct the Estate Planning Conference and conduct appropriate financial planning seminars to maximize effectiveness of Planned Giving efforts.
Develop and maintain personal contact with prospects to develop their interest in deferred gifts and to provide information concerning the utilization of the gift at Duke University; coordinate activities with prospects attorney and/or financial advisor to determine the most appropriate method of deferred giving and to ensure necessary arrangements for collection of the gift.
Determine fiscal requirements and prepare budgetary recommendations; monitor, verify and reconcile expenditure of budgeted funds.
Direct various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules.
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training
Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelors degree program. Juris Doctor Degree or advanced degree and equivalent related professional certification/credentials in tax, finance, business or other related field strongly preferred.
Experience
Minimum of 8 - 10 years of related fundraising experience in a health care/academic medical center setting or equivalent experience in a non- profit institution, estate or financial planning field. Demonstrated success in fundraising and experience with major gift donors is required. A track record of soliciting and closing six- and seven-figure gifts is preferred and experience in eight-figure gifts a plus.
