Occupational Summary

Manage overall engineering, maintenance and facility services for Duke University Hospital inpatient facilities and related complex building systems. Provide professional engineering support for both inpatient and outpatient facilities.

Work Performed

Manage and coordinate the overall maintenance and engineering support for Duke Hospital inpatient facilities and systems; establish and maintain a routine and preventive maintenance program for the facilities and supporting systems.

Coordinate planning for maintenance and restoration projects; monitor the execution, completion and inspection of projects.

Consult and collaborate with other departments, administration, contractor support, and vendors in determining building needs for both short and long term planning; provide professional engineering support to Duke Hospital and Duke Clinic and associated facilities for construction, maintenance and repair needs.

Review plans, specifications and equipment; inspect facilities and make recommendations in compliance with TJC, NFPA, OSHA, and other state and federal codes and regulations applicable to inpatient service facilities.

Continually seek ways to improve service and reduce costs including reduction in energy utilization.

Carry out management/supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable procedures. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; performance management; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Make recommendations regarding annual operating and capital budgets to direct report.

Make recommendations regarding the purchase of equipment, supplies, and maintenance contracts.

Continuously improve technical and service quality by identifying customer needs and utilizing available resources to meet or exceed those needs.

Identify and develop employee strengths and weaknesses. Prepare development plans for employees.

Review and assist in developing departmental policies and procedures ensuring consistency with Duke policies, state, local and federal codes and standards.

Conduct periodic rounds in assigned areas in order to provide a secure and safe work environment for all faculty, staff, visitors, and patients.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

BS degree in Engineering or Management or equivalent degree applicable to facility management.

Experience

Position requires a minimum of 6 years experience in healthcare facility maintenance operations of which 3 years must be in a leadership role.

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.

Skills

Must have knowledge of TJC, CMS, DFS, State and Local Codes, and NFPA standards; good communication and leadership skills required.

Experience or familiarity with CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System is required.

Familiarity with emergency generators, medical gas, and fire alarm systems; compliance testing and inspections is required.
