Occupational Summary

Perform professional level Civil Engineer duties for the Duke University Facilities Management Department.

Work Performed

Participate in the design, planning, evaluation, procurement, construction, operation and maintenance of University water, sewer and storm distribution systems to ensure that the needs of the University are met in the most economical and effective manner.

Review engineering plans, specifications and equipment for the construction and rehabilitation of water and wastewater systems, including collection and distribution systems; inspect projects during and following installation and advise as to compliance with specifications prior to University acceptance.

Assist in the continued development of University standards to provide guidelines for future project planning, design, construction and maintenance.

Advise and assist with problems involving system maintenance, such as, but not restricted to, hydraulic analysis, fluid dynamics and system modeling.

Manage storm water management plan as required by the City of Durham.

Interface with City, consultants and contractors to ensure proper implementation.

Research methods to conserve, capture and re-use water resources (storm, waste, and condensate).

Prepare reports and analysis setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.

Participate in the design, planning, evaluation, construction and maintenance of University roads, sidewalks and bike paths to ensure that the needs of the University are met in the most economical and effective manner.

Monitor, examine and verify expenditure of funds to established project budgets.

Support the staff responsible for multi year financial planning, particularly including identifying risks and mitigation strategies.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires a B.S. in Civil, Environmental, or related Engineering degree.

Experience

Work generally requires 0 to 4 years relevant experience.

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Skills

Knowledge of design for grading, storm water management, utility layout, soil erosion prevention, culvert design and construction techniques and stream restoration. Knowledge of site development permitting regulations including wetlands and stream encroachment and the environmental permitting process. Ability to create and maintain positive customer and stakeholder relationships. CAD drafting skills utilizing AutoCAD. Microsoft Office skills including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
