Occupational Summary

Provide direction and coordination of Duke University Police Department activities involved in the protection of life and property, enforcement of statutes and University regulations, and investigation of accidents and criminal acts; serve as Acting Director in the absence of the Director, University Police.

Work Performed

Provide direction and coordination of Duke University Police Department activities involved in the protection of life and property, enforcement of statutes and University regulations, and investigation of accidents and criminal acts; represent the Director, University Police in his/her absence assuming final accountability for the overall departmental emergency or crisis response strategy.

Establish and/or recommend establishment of policies and procedures for the entire Police Department; serve in an advisory capacity to University officials; serve as principal advisor to the Director regarding law enforcement operations.

Provide liaison to departments and other special interests within the University and Medical Center regarding Police Department operations.

Serve as the department's primary spokesperson to the news media and external organizations regarding Police Department issues and activities.

Manage the planning and coverage of major special events conducted on University property.

Supervise and/or conduct internal investigations based on alleged misconduct or violations of departmental policy.

Prepare operational reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations and conclusions.

Manage various personnel functions including, but not limited to, hiring, disciplinary actions, grievances, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires communications and analytical skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program in one of the social sciences. Work requires North Carolina Police Certification.

Experience

Work requires a knowledge of law enforcement methods, techniques and procedures normally acquired through seven years of law enforcement experience to include at least two years of supervisory experience in order to acquire skills necessary to manage and coordinate activities of a major division of the Police Department and to assist in the overall direction of the Department.

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Work requires a valid North Carolina Driver's License.
