Occupational Summary

This position plays a critical role in overseeing and managing visa and immigration services for the international student and scholar community. This position involves developing and implementing strategies to ensure compliance with immigration laws and regulations while providing exceptional service to students, faculty, and staff.

Work Performed

Develop and implement a comprehensive strategic plan for visa services to support the enterprise global initiatives.

Provide leadership and vision for the visa services team, ensuring alignment with Duke University and Duke University Health System goals and objectives.

Ensure the university's compliance with federal, state, and local immigration laws and regulations.

Conduct regular audits and assessments to identify and mitigate compliance risks.

Oversee the processing of visa applications, extensions, and related immigration services for international students, scholars, and employees.

Stay abreast of changes in immigration laws and regulations and adjust processes accordingly.

Maintain strong relationships with relevant government agencies and consulates.

Provide expert guidance and support to international students, scholars, and employees on visa-related matters.

Facilitate orientation sessions on visa regulations and requirements.

Collaborate with academic departments, admissions, international programs, and other relevant units to streamline visa-related processes.

Serve as a resource for university departments on matters related to immigration and visas.

Work with University Counsel to manage policies and procedures and resolve individual visa issues.

Collaborate with other Universities about best practices.

Work with University Government Relations to counsel and lobby on best practices for furthering the goals of Duke University.

Oversee the maintenance of accurate and up-to-date records related to international students and scholars.

Generate reports and data analyses as needed.

Develop and implement crisis management plans for visa-related issues.

Serve as a point of contact during visa-related emergencies.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work generally requires organizational, analytical and communication skills normally acquired through the completion of a master's degree program.

Experience

Requires 6 years of experience in a relevant field (e.g., International Education, Public Administration, Law).
