Occupational Summary

Supervise and coordinate work activities required to maintain all Duke University grounds and natural landscape features or supervise and coordinate work activities which are required in the collection and disposal of solid waste from Duke University facilities.

Work Performed

Plan and coordinate a variety of work activities involved in either grounds maintenance and landscaping projects for University grounds and other designated local off campus properties or in the collection and disposal of solid wastes from Duke University facilities utilizing specialized heavy duty refuse trucks as well as specialized refuse containers.

Develop, outline and coordinate long range plans; evaluate and recommend methods for increased efficiency and cost reduction in terms of manpower, equipment and materials.

Coordinate and evaluate in house training programs and provide technical guidance/instruction to staff ensuring compliance with established standards.

Establish and implement a program of preventive maintenance for grounds maintenance equipment; evaluate equipment and tools to determine maintenance and replacement schedules.

Supervise shop personnel involved in the maintenance and repair of specialized grounds and sanitation equipment; establish and maintain preventive program for departmental fleet vehicles.

Evaluate new equipment and materials and prepare purchasing specifications; maintain sufficient inventory of materials, supplies and equipment for performance of duties.

Prepare and maintain records and other data regarding work assigned and time allotted for completion of work to assist in determination of workload projections and budget preparation.

Coordinate activities of the greenhouse operation with landscaping needs and requirements to ensure adequate supply of plants and shrubs.

Recommend appropriate disposal processes for Duke Recycles; ensure departmental compliance with regulations governing recycling.

Recommend various personnel functions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires the ability to provide instructions, coordinate the work of others and prepare and maintain records generally equivalent to a high school education.

Experience

Work requires five years experience in sanitation operations to acquire knowledge of sanitation techniques, methods and equipment or six years ground maintenance experience.
