Occupational Summary
Develop, monitor and evaluate assigned occupational health and environmental safety programs within Duke University to ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations; provide specialized technical expertise in radiation safety, biological safety, occupational safety and hygiene, environmental programs, fire safety or ergonomics as assigned.
Work Performed
Develop, monitor and evaluate occupational health and environmental safety programs for Duke University to ensure compliance with applicable regulations; evaluate, modify and implement alternative methods for achieving desired goals.
Provide specialized technical support in annual audits and periodic evaluations of work environments to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
Coordinate and supervise assigned programs 'including, but not limited to, radiation safety, biological safety, occupational safety and hygiene, environmental programs, fire safety or ergonomics as assigned; serve as technical consultant to faculty, staff and researchers regarding environmental safety management issues, supervise the investigation of incidents and exposures. Negotiate contracts for hazardous waste disposal; develop and coordinate cost containment programs associated with hazardous waste management.
Develop and implement training and educational programs in environmental safety for Duke University Medical Center faculty and staff.
Assist the Director, Medical Center Environmental Safety Office in planning and setting goals and objectives for hazardous waste management, environmental safety and/or occupational health.
Supervise detailed studies to assess occupational and environmental safety hazards, exposures to hazards and effectiveness of controls and hazard reduction potential.
Recommend various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, merit recommendations, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training
Work generally requires a bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Chemistry, Physics, Biological Science or related scientific field.
Certification in one of the following specialty areas preferred: Certified Radiologic Physicist (CFP); Diplomat of the American Board of Science in Nuclear Medicine (DABSNM); Certified Medical Physicist (CMP); Diplomat of the American Board of Medical Physics (DABMP); Registered Radiation Protection Technologist (RRPT); Certified Health Physicist (CHP); Diplomat of the American Board of Health Physics (DABHP); Certified in Infection Control (CIC); Certified Occupational Health Nurse (COHN); Certified Biological Safety Professional (CBSP); Certified Safety Professional (CSP); Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH); Registered Occupational Hygienist (ROH); Certified Environmental Professional (CEP); Certified Hazardous Material Manager (CHMM); Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS); Certified Professional Ergonomist (CPE); or Certified Human Factors Professional (CHFP).
Experience
Work requires three years of progressive experience in radiation safety, biological safety, occupational safety and hygiene, environmental programs, fire safety or ergonomics.
A master's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene or other field related to the disciplines listed above may offset one required year of experience.
