Occupational Summary
Reporting to the Senior Assistant Vice President for Principal Gifts Programs, the Assistant Vice President for Gift Planning is a member of University Development's senior team and strategically leads all aspects of the Gift Planning program. The AVP directs the overall strategy for fundraising, marketing, administration and stewardship of the program, solicits major outright and deferred gifts, provides technical assistance to senior administrators and colleagues, directs the work of gift planning officers, and oversees trusts and estates administration.
Work Performed
Provide creative leadership and vision to the strategic planning and development of the Gift Planning program within the Office of University Development, conceiving of and helping to implement new programmatic concepts as shifts in the gift planning landscape warrant.
Oversee the trajectory of specialized programs within Gift Planning that serve the entire university, including Duke Health, such as the client service model and comprehensive reunion efforts.
Provide effective leadership in working with senior administrators and colleagues on gift planning issues and techniques; lead an ongoing training and education effort for university wide development staff; conduct gift planning seminars for alumni, faculty, staff, and friends of the University.
Represent University Development by serving on and/or leading institutional committees or task forces as appropriate; serve as a senior staff member in formulating gift policy; maintain liaison with representatives of other University offices and professional organizations.
Provide creative, customized opportunities for major donors; work with development colleagues in crafting suggestions for major gift solicitations, especially within the comprehensive reunion model and timeline; prepare proposals and present them to prospective donors of outright, deferred, or split-interest gifts; develop and maintain personal contact with prospects; coordinate activities with prospective donors and their attorneys and/or financial advisors to determine appropriate gift planning techniques and to ensure necessary arrangements.
Collaborate on a strategic stewardship plan for gift planning donors at the highest levels, including helping to envision stewardship of the Heritage Society, the giving society that recognizes donors who have made bequest intentions.
Oversee planning, implementation, and evaluation of advisory and marketing services of gift planning techniques for use by Duke University and its professional schools and units.
Determine fiscal requirements of the department and prepare budgetary recommendations; ensure expenditures are monitored, verified, and reconciled.
Direct preparation of operational reports and analyses, setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.
Direct various personnel functions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers, and vacation schedules.
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training
Bachelor degree required; advanced degree (J.D. or M.B.A.) preferred.
Legal experience or expertise in the area of estates and trusts is preferred as is experience in tax planning and knowledge of charitable tax laws.
Experience
Work requires the ability to provide creative leadership and vision for a comprehensive gift planning program as well as the ability to effectively manage the gift planning staff, generally acquired through ten years of relevant experience in estate, financial, gift, or tax planning, including three to five years in a management/supervisory or project leadership role.
