Occupational Summary

Responsible for the clinical coordination, recruitment, on boarding, evaluation process and instructor development/training for Clinical Nurse Educators for the Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing program offered by the Duke University School of Nursing; and serves as a Clinical Instructor.

Work Performed

Manage decision process for the identification of clinical sites

Manage compliance for all School of Nursing clinical instructors for the completion and documentation of site-specific orientation and training requirements, immunizations, and security issues for clinical personnel and students.

Ensure student compliance for all clinical agencies in conjunction with Clinical Placement Office and Compliance Office.

Take appropriate administrative action for those in non-compliance and communicate with Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Education and appropriate course faculty.

Ensure all requirements regarding facility orientation, pre-rotation staffing, credentialing, training on electronic medical records systems, OSHA, and all documentation are met based upon assigned deadlines.

Develop program initiatives for the effective integration of clinical instructors into the ABSN program, with consideration of training needs including development of an educational philosophy, recognition of teaching-learning styles, provision of constructive feedback in the clinical setting, and substantive evaluation.

Research, develop, and integrate an effective database system for the achievement of various requirements for Clinical Instructors.

Identify staffing needs for clinical instructors in the ABSN program.

Ensure and participate in the effective recruitment of new clinical instructors in conjunction with Duke University Human Resources.

Manage the onboarding process for clinical instructors; including assignments, verification of credentials and work experience, hire pay rate recommendations.

Provide regular reports to the Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Education regarding staffing, compliance, and other activities.

Evaluate clinical instructors for compliance with relevant regulations.

Develop and implement processes and procedures to obtain evaluation data for clinical instructors and clinical sites each semester.

Manage processes and procedures regarding performance reviews to support formal evaluations by Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Education or designated authority.

Assess the effectiveness of regional clinical facilities by building relationships with CIs, managers, staff and students, in order to to promote strong clinical relationships

Formalize clinical instructor development activities in coordination with various resources.

Oversee the creation of Web-based resources for standardizing materials for instructors; including guidelines of unit orientation of students, expectation setting, facilitating clinical conferences, coaching for improvement, coaching through substantive feedback, initiating learning improvement plans, and developing written evaluations.

Work in conjunction with faculty course coordinators to ensure an adequate course overview training session for clinical instructors at the beginning of each semester; and a substantive debriefing session at the conclusion of each clinical semester.

Serve as a mentor to all new clinical instructors in their first semester of teaching. Serve as clinical instructor as needed.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires graduation from an accredited Master of Science in Nursing program.

Licensure as a registered nurse in North Carolina and BCLS certification are required.

Experience

Work requires a least three years of full-time clinical experience as a registered nurse.

Candidate must meet the North Carolina Board of Nursing administrative requirement for faculty regarding preparation in teaching and learning principles for adult education, including curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation as cited in the Administrative Code of the Board of Nursing within one year of hire.

Skills

Demonstrated organizational and planning skills; ability to effectively manage numerous projects simultaneously; attention to detail and accuracy.

Ability to manage competing priorities and the needs of diverse stakeholders.

Computer competency with database management and spreadsheet software.
