Occupational Summary

Office of the Vice Dean for Basic Science. Partner with the Assistant Dean for Basic Science to ensure continued advancement of initiatives under the oversight of the Vice Dean. Under delegated authority from the Vice Dean, lead advancement of strategic priorities in all basic science areas.

Work Performed

Office of the Vice Dean for Basic Science

Represent theVice Dean in regular matters with faculty.

Coordinate with stakeholders across campus to maintain transparency and partnership on cross-school research activities.

Participate in and plan innovations for basic science faculty support initiatives, including pilot and bridge funding programs, orientations, and other efforts.

Partner with the Office of the Vice Dean for Faculty and others on the planning and implementation of programs.

Serve as a liaison with the Office for External Partnerships to promote and support innovation and entrepreneurship in the basic science departments.

Advise the Vice Dean for Basic Sciences and Department leadership on strategy and opportunities.

Service Center Oversight

In consultation with the Vice Dean for Basic Science, develop a multi- year strategic plan for the SOM service centers that aligns with the School's vision and priorities.

Develop and implement a comprehensive review process for service centers, including establishing metrics and advising service center leadership on those metrics.

With the Research Resources Manager, meet with prospective service centers.

Review proposals for new service centers and make recommendations tothe Vice Dean for Basic Science and other approvers.

Identify strategic gaps in research support and work in coordination with research groups and relevant offices to determine how to fill that gap.

Leverage subject matter knowledge of relevant fieldsto provide expert guidance on mature or commoditized services.

Advise the Vice Dean on alternative sources for these services, to ensure uninterrupted and affordable research support for the research community. Manage life cycle planning for SOM servicecenters.

Provide scientific and operational oversight to centrally-owned service centers.

Collaborate with the Office of Scientific Integrity and service center leadership to ensure SOM shared resources follow best practice guidelines for data stewardship.

Serve on institutional, SOM, and other committees and meetings related to service centers.

Educational Programs

Collaborate with the Associate Dean for Research Training, Assistant Dean for Graduate and Postdoctoral Diversity & Inclusion, the Director of the Office of Postdoctoral Studies, and others to ensure the ongoing success and financial stability of the SOM biomedical trainee experience.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

PhD in basic ortranslational science field Prefer MBA, MHA, or equivalent business experience or training.

Experience

Seven years progressive scientific leadership experience in a university or nonprofit setting

Skills

Strong organizational and analytical skills with attention to detail Outstanding communication skills, both written and verbal Quick learner adept at self-management and successful at managing multiple projects simultaneously.
