Occupational Summary
Coordinate and participate in the administrative and professional activities related to conservation projects for the Duke University Primate Center in Madagascar. Serve as the Primate Center's official representative in Madagascar.
Work Performed
Coordinate and participate in the administrative and professional activities related to conservation projects for the Duke University Primate Center (DUPC) in Madagascar; coordinate activities with Malagasy government officials as required.
Represent the DUPC in Madagascar to gain the cooperation of Malagasy authorities in implementing conservation, research and educational goals; negotiate objectives, commitments and roles of the DUPC and Malagasy government with respect to meeting project goals.
Develop plans for increased protection and successful reintroduction of captive-bred lemurs into the wild; monitor captive population and determine how to meet conservation goals.
Participate in fund raising efforts to include identifying prospective donors, cultivating and soliciting funds and preparing and reviewing project proposals and grant applications.
Maintain liaison between DUPC and international groups concerning conservation issues.
Advise DUPC concerning acquisition and disposition of primates; assist with developing and updating DUPCs long range plans relating to conservation.
Review and assist with conservation-related research projects; file reports describing research to the Duke University Research Committee.
Ensure necessary legal requirements are met to allow for shipments of primates into and out of Madagascar by DUPC.
Coordinate and monitor administrative and financial matters including, but not limited to, purchasing, local contracts and training; interview and approve all local hiring; prepare and submit financial reports and records as required; make budget projections concerning project costs.
Prepare reports and analyses setting forth progress, trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions as required by the Malagasy government, DUPC and others.
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training
Work requires technical expertise in primate management generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree in Zoology or a related field.
Experience
Work requires five years related professional experience.
