Occupational Summary
Provide support to the Director of Corporate Payroll in the development, preparation, training, and implementation of all payroll related processes and initiatives (policies, procedures, reports, applications). The position is directly responsible for oversight of the Operations and Customer Service functions within the organization.
Work Performed
Responsible for managing daily activities of Corporate Payroll office to ensure stringent payroll-processing deadlines and customer service inquiries are met.
Determine procedures to ensure all reporting of deductions, taxes and other informational returns required for compliance are completed accurately and timely.
Direct the staff responsible for operations and customer service functions to ensure compliance with policy and procedures and addressing payroll related inquiries.
Advise the Director on policy changes to ensure compliance.
Determine procedures to ensure all employees at the university are paid promptly and accurately.
Develop various communications for distribution to Departmental Heads, Departmental Payroll Representatives regarding payroll deadlines, business process changes, etc.
Determine needs for control reports to ensure compliance with procedures.
Supervise various personnel actions including but not limited to hiring, promotions and transfers. Implement corrective actions immediately upon identification of issues.
Assist the Director of Financial Training by providing SME advice on all payroll related training for accurate and up-to-date information.
Work with the offices of Human Resources, Benefits, Legal Counsel, Corporate Tax, Accounts Payable and Employee Travel & Reimbursement as necessary in maintaining operations and ensuring accurate and timely payments.
Serve as a resource expert to administrative and professional personnel to effectively address/resolve matters related to payroll processing and time reporting activities.
Assist in the coordination of calendar year-end activities that incudes timely and accurate loading of files, creation of tax statements, system testing and notifications.
Conduct regularly scheduled staff meetings that address unit issues including: new and/or updated policies, mandates and procedures applicable to payroll processing activities; training; workloads; and areas of concern/other issues.
Serve as Department Head in the absence of the Director.

Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training
A Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Accounting or related field is required.
Experience
Work requires 5 years of progressive experience managing payroll operations in a large, complex environment, preferably in higher education.
A master's degree in a business-related field may be substituted for 2 years experience.
