Occupational Summary

Develop and manage a wide range of communications, research, and writing projects.

Work Performed

Reporting to the Vice President, Chief of Staff and University Secretary, the Special Assistant to the President will serve as an integral member of the Presidents Office staff with following responsibilities.

Manage all presidential correspondence (coordinating the work of the Assistant to the President) and assist the President in creating a high volume of executive-level communications including talks, speeches, presentations, and op-eds.

Serve as the Presidents Office liaison on writing projects with other University offices.

Ensure the accurate, proper, and timely flow of information to and from the Presidents Office in support of recurring and special writing projects.

As requested, research topics of interest to the President and the Vice President/Chief of Staff and prepare briefings for events and meetings - Support the work of the Vice President/Chief of Staff in developing strategy for presidential communications and scheduling.

Develop and maintain the presidential website.

Draft event scripts for university ceremonies and dinners, working with the Office of University Ceremonies and Special Events.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Bachelors degree, preferably from a liberal arts institution

Experience

Two years of writing experience or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.

Skills

Excellent writing, editing, oral communication, interpersonal, organizational, and research skills are essential, particularly the ability to write creative, well researched, well organized, and occasion specific prose in a fast-paced environment. Must be a good listener, be able to work in a confidential environment, have a track record of meeting deadlines, and possess knowledge of higher education, particularly research universities.
