Occupational Summary

Assist the Marine Superintendent in providing Duke University Marine Laboratory research vessel and appropriate equipment to research users on a schedule to meet their needs; in the absence of the Marine Superintendent assume his/her duties and responsibilities.

Work Performed

Assist in the administration of all business support operations such as fuel, food, logistics and marine operations, including vessel maintenance, repair, provisioning and inventory of related equipment.

Ensure efficient utilization of Marine Laboratory vessel and fulfillment of operational requirements of approved projects.

Coordinate the use, repair and maintenance of all shipboard equipment, including cranes, winches, conductor cable and wire, laboratory equipment and space, shipboard electronics for navigation, echo sounding, speed log, time, wind and speed direction, and communications.

Coordinate shore support logistics, including supervision of vessel in port maintenance; supervise contractors engaged in maintenance and repair work.

Recommend various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through a bachelor's degree program.

Experience

Work generally requires four years experience coordinating logistical/support activities for research, inventory management and distribution, or other related administrative or business support capacity in order to acquire skills necessary to assist in the management of a variety of activities for the Duke/UNC Oceanographic Consortium (DUNCOC) such as planning for fuel, food supplies, vessel maintenance, and scheduling of research vessel and equipment usage.
