Occupational Summary

The Director of Training, University Development oversees the training function for the Office of University Development and provides leadership in developing and implementing a training program that addresses existing and emerging needs within the university-wide development community.

Work Performed

Translates University Development's mission, vision, and values into a strategic training plan which is updated annually.

Converts the strategic training plan into annual goals and objectives with initiatives, metrics, owners, and timelines.

Collaborates with University Development management and staff in understanding function's priorities in order to provide timely and relevant training products, services, and solutions.

Contributes to the University Development function by providing training expertise that supports fundraising activities, including Duke Annual Fund, Major Gifts, Principal Gifts, Gift Planning, and Corporate and Foundation Relations.

Collaborates with school/unit Development management and staff in understanding their needs and jointly developing training products, services, and solutions.

Partners and aligns with the Duke's Learning and Organization Development organization on governance, and training methodology, processes, and tools.

Assesses, researches, designs, develops, delivers, and evaluates training products, services, and solutions.

Establishes and maintains a robust communications system with stakeholders for ensuring the success of the training function.

Performs people management and leadership responsibilities for direct reports, including recruiting, selecting, onboarding, learning and development, recognizing and rewarding, employment engagement, and succession management.

Manages multiple projects concurrently to meet varied needs of diverse customers.

Develops and manages budgets according to University policies, processes, and practices.

Serves on department and university task forces or committees formed to address a specific organization challenges and opportunities.

Engages in professional development activities that will improve his/her capability and professional expertise and mastery to deliver exceptional services to University Development and its customers and partners.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Bachelor's degree in Business, Marketing, Communications, Training, or related discipline. Master's degree preferred.

Experience

Requires at least 10 years experience in development. At least five years experience in assessing, researching, designing, developing, and evaluating training products, services, and solutions.

Five years of people management experience, preferably in higher education.

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
