Occupational Summary
Primary responsibility for overseeing and coordinating the organ procurement process.
Work Performed
Primary responsibility for overseeing and coordinating the organ procurement process from the initial call of organ availability to post- op management.
This includes assisting with required regulatory documentation, checking verification of brain death and blood type, surgical organ, lymph node, tissue and blood vessel procurement, and appropriate interaction with operating room personnel.
Communication with the surgical team involved in the recipient procedure is also expected.
Assists with surgery as a Certified Surgical Tech and provides proper care and travel accommodations for the organs to ensure safe transport back to Duke Hospital for transplant surgery.
Responsible for supporting organ procurement for other community programs external to Duke.
On-call at least 5 days per week to be available to travel to organ procurements, by air or land.
Provide first assistant support with Transplant Surgery at Duke Hospital, working under the supervision of the Transplant surgeons.
Assist with surgery as a Certified Surgical Tech and provides proper care and travel accommodations for the organs to ensure safe transport back to Duke Hospital for transplant surgery.
This position is also responsible for supporting organ procurement for other community programs external to Duke.
Ensure consistent best practices and quality control of the organ procurement/transplant process.
Position assists with clinical donor management, preparation for kidneys on perfusion pump, lymph node removal, management and supervision of non heart beating donors, surgical cannulation of non heart beating, organ preservation, and clinical transplant recipient post op management.
This position has responsibility to ensure consistent best practices and quality control of the organ procurement/transplant process.
Assist with research projects in the Transplant Division of Duke Surgery, specifically with large animal surgeries (non human primate kidney transplants.)
In order to participate in large animal surgery, all regulatory requirements for working with laboratory animals must be met first (ex. clinical trial of a liver perfusion device that will require cannulation of the liver vasculature and bile duct and proper placement of the liver on the device, transport back to Duke, and monitoring of the liver after its arrival at Duke).
This role involves communication with the liver transplant surgical team.
Provide direction and guidance to medical residents and fellows.
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training
Position requires completion of an accredited Bachelor's degree, preferably in Science.
Position requires the certification of a surgical technician. CST/CSFA required.
Experience
Position requires ten (10) or more years of experience in surgical assisting with organ procurements.
Position requires ten (10) or more years of experience as an employee of a Transplant program.
Skills
Must be highly flexible with the ability to adapt to a changing work schedule.
The ability to effectively work in a high stress environment.
They must have extensive surgical transplant experience.
Must be able to maintain a calm and professional demeanor.
The ability to lead various team members with varying levels of experience and knowledge.
Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Must be able to navigate a complex environment.
Ensure completion and compliance of UNOS regulatory requirements.
