Occupational Summary

The Vice Dean works with the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs/Dean of Students (AVP/DOS) to provide overall strategic direction and management to the Dean of Students office. The Vice Dean leads and administers critical student support operations within the Dean of Students Office and collaborates with other senior leaders on cross-functional projects, programs, and services. Addresses crisis response and risk mitigation protocols. Serves as primary Dean of Students Office liaison with key institutional partners. Provides leadership and operational oversight of critical student services. Manages relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Oversees budgets and staffing.

Work Performed

Coordinate work of the Assistant and Associate Deans and other Dean of Students staff members. Provide leadership for staff recruitment, hiring, continuous learning, supervision, retention, and evaluation.

Manage on-going development, monitoring, and improvement of comprehensive student support services. Facilitate the development, review and implementation of policies, procedures and practices. Actively address Division crisis response and risk mitigation efforts.

Provide management and oversight of student records and files ensuring that records and data are maintained in accordance with University policies and federal and state regulations. Prepare annual report and other reports and analyses as requested.

Develop budget and monitor expenses. Prepare variance and other financial reports as requested and in a timely manner.

Serve as a member of the Senior Leadership group in the formation of policies and best practices to guide the work of the Division. Collaborate with senior leaders in the development of cross-departmental projects, programs, and services that support the Division's key norms. Supervise other student affairs functions depending on priorities established by the Associate Vice President/Provost/Dean of Students.

Foster strategic internal and external partnerships including students, deans, directors, department heads, faculty, administrators, staff, parents, alumni, and Durham community members. Represent the DOS office and Division of Student Affairs on campus-wide committees and initiatives. Serve as a resource, trainer and consultant to faculty, staff and students.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Minimum Master's degree in relevant field.

Experience

Eight years of post-Master's experience in education or closely related setting. Experience working with highly selective and culturally diverse student populations as well as relationship management success with key stakeholders. Demonstrated success at development and implementation of innovative programs and services.
