Occupational Summary

Provide consultation, programming assistance, and data processing instruction to departmental personnel to include developing or modifying computer programs in support of research and/or instruction activities, teaching computer courses, and reviewing and correcting computer programs for departmental users of computing facilities.

Work Performed

Provide consultation, programming assistance, and data processing instruction to departmental users of computer facilities; analyze department's programming needs and requirements and assist in determining feasibility of utilizing original or existing computer programs. Develop or modify computer programs to meet departmental requirements in support of research and/or instruction activities; develop sequence of program steps; translate flow charts, decision tables or other instructions into appropriate computer language; make trial runs to verify accuracy and completeness of program; correct program errors by altering program steps and sequence as required.

Review computer programs prepared by departmental users to ensure desired results are attainable and efficient use of department's computing facility is maintained; assist user in correcting programming discrepancies.

Plan and teach courses and prepare instructional materials for students, staff members and faculty members of the department concerning computer programming techniques and data processing capabilities of computing facilities within the department and the university; provide informal instruction to users as needed.

Assist department administrators in determining feasibility of adapting manual office procedures to computer applications; develop, modify and maintain computer programs to implement computer applications; review existing programs to increase operation proficiency or adapt programs to new requirements.

Assist department administrators in researching and selecting software and hardware appropriate to department's administrative, academic and research needs.

Prepare and maintain form and procedure manuals to effect implementation and continuing operation of computer applications.

Consult with departmental users as required to provide technical guidance and direction and to develop efficient programs compatible with departmental needs. Maintain liaison with representatives of other University data processing operations and professional organizations to ensure utilization of current principles and techniques.

Prepare reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions as requested.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires a Bachelor's degree in mathematics, computer science or a computer related field, or equivalent coursework or technical training.

Experience

Work requires one year of related programming or analytical experience with knowledge of several computer languages or programs and/or knowledge of the specialty area for which the position is providing support.
