Occupational Summary
The Assistant Vice Provost for Academic Communications reports jointly to the Executive Vice Provost and the Vice President for Public Affairs and Government Relations and Chief Communications Officer, and serves as a member of the senior leadership teams within both offices.
This position is responsible for providing leadership, guidance and implementation for communications activities supporting the mission of the Office of the Provost.
Work Performed
Advise and support the Provost and vice provosts on communication with faculty and administrators regarding academic policies and programs.
Provide vision, guidance and implementation for efficient, effective and coordinated communications activities representing a range of offices within the Office of the Provost.
Manage digital and social media, web presence and publications for the Office of the Provost.
Produce a wide range of content including speeches, messages, FAQs, talking points, newsletters, presentations, reports, and publications in support of the Provost's priorities.
Coordinate and collaborate with colleagues throughout the university, including those in Duke's schools and academic units, Public Affairs & Government Relations, Alumni Engagement and Development, Duke Health, and the Office of Institutional Equity, regarding initiatives of the Office of the Provost and other university priorities.
Lead special projects and initiatives in support of the missions of the Office of the Provost and Public Affairs & Government Relations.
Lead use of data and metrics to inform communications strategies and tactics within the Office of the Provost.
Lead communications and updates regarding academic programs.
Chair and serve on institutional committees and attend meetings representing the Office of the Provost and/or Public Affairs & Government Relations; help with developing priorities and setting agendas; run meetings on behalf of the Executive Vice Provost and the Vice President for Public Affairs and Government Relations and Chief Communications Officer.
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training
Work requires communication, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program in Journalism, Communications, English or a related discipline. A Master's degree is preferred.
Experience
Work requires ten years of experience in communications or a related discipline to include a minimum of three years of experience in the higher education field.
