Occupational Summary

The Director of Research Communications provides senior level leadership and oversight of Study Project and Engagement, Regulatory Medical Writing and Editing to ensure that research results are clearly and accurately delivered and within standards.

Work Performed

Develops and executes clinical research communications strategies for study projects to support the DCRI and its Sponsors and has oversight of the creation of compelling site- and participant-facing materials that integrate clinical practice with study design to enable enhanced study enrollment, retention, and data collection.

Oversight of Medical Communications to ensure that research results are clearly and efficiently conveyed and delivered.

Oversight of Regulatory Medical Writing to ensure scientific and regulatory documents are clear, concise, and scientifically accurate and adheres to the corresponding agency's standards.

Oversight and delivery of Research Communications & Engagement Portfolio of Work As part of the Operational Management Team, provides input, expertise, and ideas to the overall operational direction of the DCRI.

Develop and execute communications plans to successfully highlight the important research work done across the company, including key messages, talking points, blog posts, speeches and other collateral as needed.

Develop and implement workflow and operational processes.

Develop appropriate operational plans and identifies operational problems.

Establish and oversee appropriate quality control activities.

Ensure that SOP's are developed and complied for all operational activities.

Direct responsibility for key projects and monitors progress and performance of clinical research and operational projects to ensure compliance.

Represent the functional group in internal compliance audits, sponsor audits, and regulation audits.

Represent functional group in sales presentations and provide input into marketing and sales materials, the development of bids and proposals and the creation and use of cost standards.

Prepare budgetary forecasts for operating and capital expenses.

Develops and recommends the budgets for the areas managed.

Manages activities to assure financial goals are met.

Provide consultation and assistance to functional group director in developing goals and objectives.

Keep abreast with emerging developments and trends.

Provide operational guidance and support as well as consultation and assistance to functional group director in developing strategic plans.

Directs and supervises assigned personnel including performance evaluations, scheduling, orientation, and training.

Makes recommendations on employee hires, transfers, promotions, salary changes, discipline, terminations, and similar actions.

Resolves grievances and other personnel problems within position responsibilities.

Coordinates the assignment of tasks and helps resolve technical and operational problems.

Evaluates the impact of solutions to ensure goals are achieved.

Provides effective direction, guidance, and leadership over the staff for effective teamwork and motivation, and fosters the effective integration of efforts with system-wide initiatives.

Provides career planning advice to staff and creates development plans to help staff achieve their career goals including assigning work which leverages their skills and capabilities and provides them with opportunities for learning.

Maintains a collaborative, team relationship with peers and colleagues in order to effectively contribute to the group's achievement of goals and to help foster a positive work environment.

Performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Bachelor degree in business or clinical research or healthcare-related field required; Master's degree in related field preferred

Experience

At least 10 years of hands-on clinical research communications experience including current expertise in proposal development, innovative project delivery, people management, and budget oversight.

Skills

Prior/Current Skills in proposal development (federally funded and industry), delivery of innovative research engagement and communication.

Ability to mentor and set-example for direct reports in people management.

Ability to carefully manage budgets, utilization targets, and adjust as needed, and ability to work across a diverse team which includes both staff and faculty to meet key DCRI goals/strategies.

Ability to plan, organize and direct multiple large scale communication projects.

Highest standards of integrity, ethics and performance.

Excellent communication skills, written and oral, with the ability to represent DCRI externally across a wide range of stakeholders.
