Occupational Summary

Direct the registration and trafficking of the permanent collection of art in the Duke University Museum of Art (DUMA) by preparing and maintaining the permanent record of history, provenance, status, condition, and location of each object of art owned by or on loan to the DUMA.

Work Performed

Identify, document and catalog all pieces of art entering and/or leaving the DUMA; supervise the development and maintenance of records on all objects owned by or on loan to the Museum including records of provenance, purchase or donation, photographs, evaluation, insurance, condition, and location.

Accession all loans and permanent gifts to the Museum; arrange for shipping and receiving and photographing of objects; supervise storage of art objects.

Arrange for temporary loans and traveling shows to include transport, supervision of shipping and receiving, preparation of condition reports, storage while not on display, and consultation with conservator/restorer regarding cleaning and repair of loan objects.

Coordinate with Curator on pieces selected for installation in gallery or for loans to other museums.

Supervise all installations and reinstallations of both loan and permanent collections and all personnel involved in those activities.

Document and acknowledge all gifts to the Museum; maintain liaison with the Office of Gift Records to ensure proper recording of gifts.

Initiate and maintain contact with the Director of Corporate Risk Management as well as the underwriters office regarding insurance related issues.

Represent DUMA to professional associations and organizations.

Conduct various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires analytical, organizational and communication skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.

Experience

Work requires the ability to prepare and maintain permanent records of history, province, status, condition and location of objects of art owned by or on loan to an art museum, and the ability to coordinate lending activities, generally acquired through three years of related experience. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
