Occupational Summary

Manage computer projects including, but not limited to, development of specifications for computer systems, acquisition and installation of computer hardware and software, training of computer users, operation of computer systems, development of application software and maintenance of computer systems.

Work Performed

Analyze departmental computer systems hardware and software; recommend procedural or automated improvements and priorities and cost justification of improvements; develop detailed specifications describing functions to be automated.

Assist Director in development of long range plans for automating or improving computer Services.

Evaluate vendor proposals for hardware and software purchases and make recommendations; assist in negotiation of contractual terms and prices with hardware and software vendors.

Assist Director in developing and maintaining standards for acquisition and use of computers in the department.

Analyze departmental needs to determine potential enhancements or improvements to office procedures and activities through computer applications; design, develop and implement computerized systems for use by departments; maintain and update systems as needs and technology warrant.

Supervise and/or perform detailed testing and installation of purchased or written systems including hardware, operation systems, software and peripheral equipment to ensure smooth transitions with no loss of revenue or data.

Supervise work of programmers, technicians and other assigned personnel as needed to ensure efficient and effective operation of computer systems.

Provide routine support for computer systems including training of computer users and problem resolution.

Serve as a resource to Director of Information Systems, Departmental Directors and University officials on computer application matters including analysis, planning and strategy formulation.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires a Bachelor degree in mathematics, computer science or a computer related field, or equivalent coursework or technical training.

Experience

Work requires three years of related programming or analytical experience with knowledge of several computer languages or programs and/or knowledge of the specialty area for which the position is providing support.
