Occupational Summary

Supervise, coordinate and participate in editorial and production activities for varied technical or scientific journals.

Work Performed

Evaluate manuscripts in regard to form and content; edit or rewrite for clarity and comprehensibility; revise and rewrite manuscripts totally when necessary.

Review manuscripts for accuracy and completeness of scientific and technical information and data; perform library research to confirm if necessary; confer with authors or scholastic editors about problems and recommended changes.

Edit manuscripts and other materials with emphasis on correct grammar, spelling, form and content.

Evaluate art work submitted by authors for clarity and accuracy; discuss revisions with authors and artists; initiate proposals for improvements and clarification. Correspond with scholastic editors and authors regarding solicitation of manuscripts.

Coordinate the publishing process to include monitoring production schedule, proofreading galleys and page proofs, checking layout and illustration materials; coordinate activities and monitor deadlines between authors, scholastic editors, publishers and printers.

Compile reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.

Determine fiscal requirements, prepare budget recommendations and monitor, verify and control expenditure of funds.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.

Experience

Work generally requires one year of editorial or production experience in a publishing or related setting to acquire skills necessary to coordinate a variety of tasks such as evaluating and rewriting technical or scientific journal manuscripts for accuracy, clarity, content, and completeness, monitoring production schedules, proofreading galleys and page proofs and checking layout and illustrations.
