Occupational Summary

Supervise, coordinate and participate in the establishment and maintenance of Duke University Capital Asset Accounts to include the review of purchase documents, the establishment and maintenance of accounts, records and files and the reconciliation of plant asset accounts to the General Ledger.

Work Performed

Establish, compile and maintain capitalized accounts and records on Duke University construction projects, buildings and capital equipment to document cost and depreciation of physical facilities in accordance with federal tax laws, third party sponsorship requirements and general accounting standards. Supervise the review of purchase documents to determine materials to be capitalized and date of capitalization; evaluate all University lease/purchase evaluation and amortization schedules for all lease/purchase agreements. Review distribution of all construction/renovation costs for conformity to capitalization criteria; prepare input to the computerized fixed asset file from construction/renovation accounts and reconcile to the General Ledger. Review capital asset accounts with various internal and external auditors; prepare reports documenting cost recovery figures on patient care expenses for Medicare/Medicaid reimbursement and overhead expenses for grants, contracts, and other third party agreements. Prepare year end closing reports on Capital Asset Accounts to reconcile with the General Ledger and to provide information for the annual University Financial Report.

Develop and implement accounting procedures for Capital Asset Accounts ensuring coordination with University Accounting Operations, conformity to federal regulations and third party sponsorship requirements, and compliance by University departments.

Maintain liaison with Data Processing in the establishment and maintenance of computer systems used in Plant Accounting.

Recommend various personnel actions including but not limited to hiring, performance appraisal, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires a bachelor's degree in Business, Accounting or related field.

Experience

Work requires three years of experience to be knowledgeable in the establishment and maintenance of accounts, records, files and reconciliation of plant asset accounts to the General Ledger.
