Occupational Summary
A member of the University's senior development team. The AVP has oversight of two areas key to increasing the potential for the number and size of individual gifts to Duke University: Major Gifts and Research and Constituency Development.
The AVP will manage a staff of major gifts officers and direct a regionally-based major gifts program of identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of prospects with a focus on gift prospects of $100,000+. Works closely with the Executive Director, the Vice President for Alumni Affairs and Development, and others to develop strategies for major gifts. For Research and Constituency Development, the Director will oversee programs dedicated to the discovery, financial qualification, and assignment of potential Duke supporters.
Work Performed
Supervise a staff of eight major gifts officers who will identify, cultivate, and solicit prospects capable of gifts of $100,000 and more.
Develop a portfolio of prospects (100+) and maintain active efforts to evaluate prospects identified through fieldwork, screening, and research.
Organize a regional program of major gifts solicitation that coordinates activity among the professional schools, other academic units, and the central development office; Develop a plan for the next stage of regional/city volunteer development committees and implement changes to strengthen the roles and functions of these groups.
Establish and manage with the Executive Director a National Major Gifts Committee.
Complete the merging of the international fundraising team with the regional major gifts team by establishing clear standards for activities and results and perhaps by outlining a strategic plan for international fundraising development.
Provide oversight for interdisciplinary fundraising efforts.
Provide decision-making and oversight for special projects fundraising efforts (Duke Gardens, TIP, Chapel, FCJL, Museum, Campus Ministry, and others as needed).
Coordinate with Annual Fund and Alumni Affairs on comprehensive reunion fundraising process.
Prepare budgets and approve expenditures for the major gifts unit.
Prepare operating plans for major gifts program, including campaign strategies.
Supervise a project coordinator and staff assistant for general office management.
These staff members are responsible for four administrative secretaries who support the major gift officers.
Develop personalized stewardship plans for top 100-200 donors with high capability for new gifts with the Director of Communications and Donor Relations and the Director of Development Services.
Personnel actions include, but are not limited to, recruiting, training, performance appraisals, and promotions.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Supervise the manager of research and constituency development, who is responsible for a staff of seven.
Provide oversight for quantity and quality of research materials produced, particularly bios, profiles, and ratings.
Investigate enhanced rating and inclination indicators.
Work with the Manager of Research and Constituency Development and Executive Director on a new prospect management system.
Develop pending proposal tracking system.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training
Bachelor's degree required; an advanced degree is preferred.
Experience
Ten years of fundraising experience with a successful track record in major gifts and project management. Staff references will be requested. Campaign experience is a plus. Familiarity with research universities is preferred. Excellent oral and written communications skills as well as good organizational skills are essential. This position requires frequent travel.
