Occupational Summary

The Director of Alumni Engagement is charged with providing leadership in planning, developing, and executing a comprehensive program that ties a variety of external constituencies to the school's academic initiatives and programs. Thinking strategically, the Director will conceptualize, develop, and implement a program that couples the Law School's intellectual vitality with life-long engagement opportunities for its various constituencies, including but not limited to alumni, friends, parents, corporate executives, law firm managing and hiring partners, and judges. The Director will have professional interest in and intellectual curiosity about the legal profession necessary to work successfully with volunteers toward establishing a comprehensive, intellectually engaging alumni relations program.

Work Performed

Develop and maintain a comprehensive plan to engage alumni and constituents with the Law School, with these goals in mind:

To provide alumni and constituents with opportunities for lifelong intellectual, professional, and social engagement with the Duke Law School community and the broader Duke University; and

To connect alumni and constituents' engagement with philanthropic support for the Law School.

Maintain information on volunteer opportunities, and connect alumni and constituents to them appropriately. Develop and maintain a volunteer pipeline for Law alumni and friends seeking opportunities to share their time and talent with Duke Law School.

Lead a team responsible for producing a robust schedule of in person and virtual programs for alumni and friends, including regional events, on- campus programs, and digital engagement opportunities.

Oversee planning and implementation of on-campus alumni events including the annual reunion weekend and twice annual Law Alumni Association (LAA) Board and Alumnae Leadership Council meetings. Assist with event coordination for the Board of Visitors (BOV) meetings, scholarship celebrations, and other events as needed.

Serve as staff liaison to the Duke Law Alumni Association Board of Directors. Assist them in their roles as ambassadors of the school, advisors, and volunteers for current initiatives. Oversee their committee work, which focuses on volunteer engagement, career and professional development, and diversity, equity and inclusion, as well as the future board member nominations process and the alumni awards program. Coordinate fall and spring Board meetings and supervise management of the New Lawyers Division.

Serve as staff liaison to the Duke Law Alumnae Leadership Council. Assist the Council in achieving its mission of fostering an active network of Duke Law women through providing opportunities for women graduates to connect with each other and with current students and faculty. Oversee the planning and implementation of twice-annual Council meetings and the Council nominations process.

Track metrics of alumni engagement, and illustrate connection to philanthropy. Use this information to improve the comprehensive plan to engage alumni and constituents with Duke Law School. Oversee the Law School's participation in the engagement component of the next University-wide campaign.

Collaborate with colleagues to offer broad range of engagement opportunities to alumni and constituents. Colleagues include regional directors, faculty, and fellow staff at Duke Law School, as well as alumni affairs staff in the University's Alumni Engagement & Development Office and in other Duke schools and units.

Manage a team of two full-time staff members including the Assistant Director of Alumni Engagement and Alumni Engagement Coordinator.

Assume special projects as assigned by the dean of Duke Law School.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills normally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.

Experience

Work generally requires five years of related experience which may include experience in fundraising, alumni affairs, public relations, executive education, program administration, the practice of law, or a related field to become familiar with activities involved in successfully connecting specific constituencies using volunteer and intellectual engagement opportunities.

Skills

Ability to think and work strategically, constantly making connections between the Law School community and external constituencies.

Highest level of both written and oral communication skills.

Character and integrity to earn the complete trust and confidence of the Dean and the members of the Law School faculty.

Flexibility in meeting shifting priorities and schedules.
