Occupational Summary
Plan, direct and coordinate the dissemination of communications, including university web pages, to inform and educate the general public, the media, faculty, staff and alumni about issues and events at Duke and about contributions made by the University to the advancement of knowledge..
Work Performed
Support the Senior Vice President for Public Affairs & Government Relations, works closely with faculty leaders, senior officers of the university, academic deans, and communications officers to report and interpret news, issues, and ideas to various constituencies.
Direct a staff of professional journalists responsible for providing information services to print and broadcast media, and the writing, editing and production of Dialogue, Daily Dialogue, news releases and special communications; providing leadership, direction, vision, and sound management practices and policies to News & Communications Services staff.
Manages daily reporting, writing, and editing assignments of news and features; decide where, when and how information will be disseminated for all materials prepared for distribution to the press; oversees all publications and manage administrative/technical operations, including conceptualizing and implementing modern and cost-effective technologies for News & Communications Services functions, with an emphasis on webbased communications.
Works closely with the Senior Vice President and other leaders in the Office of Public Affairs and Government Relations in setting priorities and goals for the division.
Contributes to strong, team oriented relationships with other units of the Office of Public Affairs and Government Relations.
Develops and maintains strong liaison relationships with other academic and administrative offices, including the Department of Athletics and Medical Center and Health System News offices.
Develops and maintains working relationships with key reporters and editors - locally, nationally, and internationally in print and electronic media.
Keeps current with latest technologies for communicating with various media and other internal and external constituencies.
Keeps abreast of developments within Duke and in the field of higher education, and alerts senior administration to major issues that should be addressed.
Maintains strong relationships with key university officers to stay apprised of institutional priorities and policies.
Keeps current with latest technologies for communicating with various media and other internal and external constituencies.
Provides consultation to campus groups on news and communications strategies.
Encourages effective use of the web in support of the Universitys mission.
Provides leadership, especially related to content, consultation, and support for the creation and use of web-based materials and the implementation of web-based technologies, including maintaining a comprehensive set of policy guidelines.
Works with appropriate staff in the Office of Information Technology, the Office of Public Affairs and Government Relations, the Web Advisory Committee, and others in the Duke community to develop and promulgate web design standards for use by the university community.
Implements affirmative action consistent with Duke goals; promotes professional development and advancement for News and Communications Services staff.
Develops and implements means for staff evaluation by both external and internal constituencies.
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training
Work requires a B.A. in Communications or related field with an advanced degree highly preferred.
Experience
Requires a minimum of ten years of news/public affairs experience with an emphasis in writing, editing, and exercising independent news judgment; experience with web based communications. Experience in higher education environment preferred.
