Occupational Summary

This position works with researchers and scientists at Duke University to review and direct research and development projects in the drug development and biological sciences space. This position also develops summaries of the scientific content to present and communicate research findings, and foster collaborations and develop strategic partnerships between academia and industry for the translation of academic research and development. This position reports to the Executive Director of the Office of Licensing and Ventures (OLV).

Work Performed

Under the supervision of Executive or Associate Directors of OLV:

Oversee new inventions and the progress of research projects in the biological sciences and drug discovery field.

Work with the Executive Director and Associate Directors of Licensing to develop goals and commercialization strategies for researchers at Duke University Source novel research results (or inventions) from Duke inventors in the biological sciences and drug discovery field, and maintain an optimal level of faculty outreach in the assigned areas.

Follow and educate scientists and research staff about relevant federal and university administrative policies and procedures.

Evaluate and analyze the work of scientists, and other research staff members in the biological sciences and drug discovery fields, including initial review of research performed and accuracy of research results, as well as reading scientific and patent literature.

Provide technical assistance and advise to scientists, and plan development activities for research projects by analyzing intellectual property generated as a result of novel research, and mapping pathways to identify new opportunities to license the technologies to pharmaceutical and biomedical companies for further development

Communicate project results, research data to internal OLV staff and management, as well as external stakeholders such as investors and industry partners.

Advise researchers in obtaining patents for their projects. Develop strategic alliances and partnerships with industry. Negotiate terms and mange agreement(s) relating to transfer of research from academia to industry.

Oversee the internship program (called Fellows Program) at the OLV of 8+ graduate student interns with responsibility of hiring, training and evaluating work.

Maintain website abstracts for OLV technology portals

Assess and determine database subscriptions for OLV

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires a Masters or higher degree in a biological sciences field, specifically in one of the following closely related areas of human disease and drug discovery studies: Molecular Medicine, Pharmacology or Immunology

Experience

Work requires a minimum of three years of research experience in a directly related biological sciences field

Excellent interpersonal skills; written and verbal communication skills; ability to interact effectively in both academic and corporate cultures; ability to interact with scientists, research sponsors, industry representatives and patent attorneys; ability to work independently as well as in a team environment; to work under pressure with tight deadlines; business experience in negotiations, contracts, and new technology commercialization; highly self-motivated professional with exceptional sales, marketing and negotiating skills; experience in evaluating the commercial potential of early stage technology, and to effectively communicate the commercialization vision; detail oriented with ability to work on multiple projects at the same time; knowledge of intellectual property law and licensing practices; high degree of energy and enthusiasm.
