Occupational Summary
Plan, organize and manage fleet maintenance service operations of the Duke University Transportation Department. Provide maintenance and repair of all University vehicles ensuring proper operation and availability of vehicles for use by University departments. This position reports directly to the Fleet Maintenance Manager and works in conjunction with the transit operations team.
Work Performed
Maintain procedures, standards and guidelines for the maintenance and repair of all automotive, heavy duty, and related mechanical equipment; prepare and implement preventive maintenance schedules for all University vehicles; Confirm repair standards to evaluate work performance of University mechanics or private vendors. Inspect vehicles to determine necessary repairs; assign work to University mechanics or qualified vendors; review and evaluate work upon completion to ensure high quality work standard.
Maintain parts inventories at adequate levels; manage parts inventory, disbursement and receipt.
Maintain appropriate record keeping systems to reflect activities associated with the inspection, maintenance and repair of vehicles; supervise the preparation and maintenance of associated cost records.
Coordinate purchasing, registering and numbering of Duke vehicles enterprise wide.
Recommend various personnel actions including, but not limited to hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules.
Manage daily shop operations in the absence of manager. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training
Work requires an education background normally acquired through a high school education with course work in skilled crafts of trades. Should have a strong background in both the maintenance and repair of both automotive and heavy duty vehicles. Must be able to provide technical assistance and training to lower level personnel.
Experience
Work requires a minimum of three years broad based experience in automotive and heavy equipment services, to include knowledge of maintenance and repair. Preference given to individuals with Cummins experience. Microsoft suite of products including outlook knowledge is necessary.
