Occupational Summary

Provide advanced professional engineering services by performing complex technical duties involved in planning, design, construction, alteration and testing related to electrical, electronic, biomedical and/or mechanical engineering fields in support of research and development activities.

Work Performed

Perform professional engineering duties of considerable scope and complexity, applying new approaches and methods in the solution of engineering problems and for the design and development of complex and specialized equipment and instrumentation systems including diagnostic systems, control systems, power systems and others; modify system design as needed.

Direct assigned phases of major projects from original conception to final output to include assigning projects, developing theoretical aspects of investigations, planning and scheduling experimental procedures, maintaining quality control, evaluating and validating data, and reporting findings.

Provide engineering assistance, instruction and consultation to faculty and student researchers and to staff members for resolution of special problems; demonstrate techniques for operating specialized equipment.

Manufacture prototype equipment to include determination, cost estimates and procurement of necessary components and integration of components into system; inspect components and test final assembly.

Collect information and data through observation, experimentation, and various other methods; supervise maintenance of technical files and manuals of information. Recommend and procure electrical, mechanical, biomedical, video and optical equipment appropriate for laboratory or project needs; maintain records of expenditures.

Ensure compliance with applicable safety and efficacy requirements.

Establish and implement maintenance schedules for various components, apparatus and systems; troubleshoot problems and perform repair work as needed. Recommend various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisal, promotions, transfers, and vacation schedules.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires a thorough knowledge of the principles of engineering and related natural sciences acquired through completion of a Bachelor's degree program in an Engineering science or a related natural science such as Physics or Chemistry. Due to professional exemption, equivalent experience cannot be substituted for bachelor's degree.

Experience

Work requires four years related experience such as an Engineer sufficient to acquire competency in the application of knowledge in the related Engineering field. A master's degree in an Engineering science or a related natural science may offset two years of experience.
