Occupational Summary

The Senior Director of Alumni Programs will plan, coordinate and implement activities in Alumni Relations for major programmatic areas to build greater alumni engagement. This individual will advance the goals and priorities of the Duke Alumni Association using strategic thinking and practical analysis to make recommendations about programmatic opportunities and resource allocation to more fully engage alumni with the University.

Work Performed

Plan, coordinate, implement, and direct a variety of alumni affairs activities and programs to promote active alumni participation in programs and events and provide opportunities for renewed contacts and enhanced relationships with Duke University; direct and supervise activities in support of assigned programmatic areas.

Make operational and programmatic decisions that have a significant impact on the successful achievement of program strategies and objectives; develop, coordinate and advise staff regarding program policy.

Plan, coordinate and administer activities of assigned programs to include developing and implementing procedures, processes, services and systems; train employees in proper methods and procedures and ensure correctness of work.

Monitor and evaluate program effectiveness using qualitative and quantitative research techniques; prepare reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends, and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.

Develop and coordinate new ideas and concepts for programs, materials and resources to supplement, expand or replace existing program components.

Function in a variety of roles within the Alumni Affairs office. This may include, but would not be limited to, working with various committees of the Duke Alumni Association Board, and other duties commensurate with this leadership position within the DAA.

Maintain liaison with other programs, offices and departments at Duke to coordinate program business and to accomplish program objectives; interface with external organizations as appropriate to ensure cooperative efforts are enhanced and available resources are utilized.

Prepare budgets and grants; monitor, verify and reconcile expenditure of budgeted funds as appropriate.

Recommend various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules for clerical and staff employees.

Job duties may require travel.

Performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.

Experience

Work requires five years of experience in alumni affairs, public relations, program administration and analysis, marketing or related field to acquire the advanced skills necessary to direct the planning and coordination of social, educational, and community service activities and events.
